5 Kingdom Brochure! Essential Question: What are the differences between each of the 5 kingdoms?

Five Kingdom Classification System - Once upon a time, all living things were lumped together into two kingdoms, namely plants and animals. - Animals included every living thing that moved, ate, and grew to a certain size and stopped growing. - Plants included every living thing that did not move or eat and that continued to grow throughout life. - It became very difficult to group some living things into one or the other, so early in the past century the two kingdoms were expanded into five kingdoms: Protista (the single-celled eukaryotes); Fungi (fungus and related organisms); Plantae (the plants); Animalia (the animals); Monera (the prokaryotes). Many biologists now recognize six distinct kingdoms, dividing Monera into the Eubacteria and Archeobacteria. - Accepted systems of classification have changed at a far faster pace than the species have taken to evolve, that's for certain. - Kingdoms are divided into categories called phyla, each phylum is divided into classes, each class into orders, each order into families, each family into genera, and each genus into species. - A species represents one type of organism, such as black bear, tiger shark, Ameoba proteus (the common amoeba), Homo sapiens (us), or Acer palmatum (Japanese maple). Note that scientific names are written Genus Species, and names should be underlined or written in italics. - Classifying larger organisms into kingdoms is usually easy, but in a microenvironment it can be tricky. http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/animals/kingdoms-of-life.htm

Please read and write down some notes about my kingdom. - Monera are single-celled organisms that don’t have a nucleus and no structure inside (prokaryotic cell). - Bacteria make up the entire kingdom. -Use to be two separate groups called: Eubacteria (Bacteria), and Archaebacteria (Archea). - There are more forms of bacteria than any other organism on Earth. - Some bacteria are beneficial to us, such as the ones found in yogurt. Others can cause us to get sick. - The monera are the simplest of organisms, almost all microscopic. -Some monera can produce their own food by photosynthesis (using energy from the sun to produce food) like plants do, but many cannot. - Some have whip like flagella that allow them to move. -10,000 species. - Have been around for 3.5 billions years.

Please read and write down some notes about my kingdom. - Protists are mostly single-celled organisms (like monera), however the major difference is that protists have a nucleus and monera does not. - They usually live in water. - Some protists move around, while others stay in one place. - Examples of protists include some algae, paramecium, and amoeba. - Protista are eukaryotes (have a nucleus and other organelles inside). - Some produce their own food by photosynthesis; others must ingest other living things. - Protists are often microscropic. -250,000 species! - Have been around for a billion years.

Please read and write down some notes about me. - Fungi can be many-celled or some are single celled organisms. - Fungi are usually motionless organisms. - They include mushrooms, molds, bread molds, and yeasts. - Cells of the Fungi have a membrane around the nucleus. - Fungi get nutrients and energy by absorbing and digesting from the surface they live on. - Most Fungi reproduce by spores. - These can be really small or really large.

Please read and write down some information about me. - Plants contain chlorophyll, a green pigment necessary for photosynthesis, a process in which plants convert energy from sunlight into food. - Plants have strong cell walls. - Plants are divided into two groups: flower- and fruit-producing plants and those that don’t produce flowers or fruits. - They include garden flowers, agricultural crops, grasses, shrubs, ferns, mosses, and conifers. - 250,000 species. - Have been around for 400 million years.

Animals are either herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores. - They use the process of respiration to get energy from their food. - They are divided into vertebrates and invertebrates and include mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish. - They have a nervous system. - 1,000,000 species. -Evidence of animals dates back 700 million years.
