Paraphrasing

Why When Homework Exams Essays You need to relate the original author’s ideas in your own word, so the idea blends with your own argument and ideas. Homework Exams Essays

How to paraphrase Read and understand the text. Put the text aside. Express the information in your own words. (Write it down) Compare your paraphrase to the original text to check that you have used different words and different sentence structures but have kept the author’s meaning.

How to avoid plagiarism Change not only the words but also how they are presented. Writers may think “use your own words” just means to replace existing words with ones that hold similar meaning. This can result in losing the meaning of the original author’s work, or it can result in plagiarism if the construct of the sentences is similar.

The “danger” of synonyms Synonyms often hold different parts of speech in the English language, so relying on synonyms for paraphrasing can result in lost meaning.
