Figure 1 Stroke-Induced Recruitment of Adult NSCs from the SVZ After stroke, NSCs from the adult SVZ migrate to the cortical site of injury. SVZ-derived NSCs can be isolated from the damaged cortex and expanded as self-renewing and multipotent neurospheres. In vivo, they give rise to reactive astrocytes that contribute to glial scar formation and can be converted into neurons by forced expression of the transcription factor Ascl1.
