Welcome to the Horizons Program Mrs. Andreolas

About me I have been a classroom teacher for the past 12 years. I have a bachelor's degree in sociology/humanities. I have a masters degree in elementary education. I have been trained in S.T.E.A.M and Literacy Through the Arts. I am a proud mother of two daughters. I am an artist, runner, traveler, and enjoy spending time on the beach. I believe every student has the power to use their voice to make a positive impact in the world.

Horizons Class Grades 3-5 meet at Mandalay Elementary school once per 6-day cycle (9:30-12:30) and we have a working lunch at 11:55. Grade 6 meets every other day for forty minutes.

Program Goals Differentiated curriculum. Design thinking for social impact. Student centered approach deepens motivation to learn and give through purpose, mastery, and autonomy. Provide different experience from their general classrooms. Develop empathy and a strong sense of self. Encourage students to take risks. Utilize higher order thinking skills while solving real world problems. Create a Classroom Social Enterprise creating a business model that facilitates both revenue and social change.

Our Curriculum 3rd Grade 4th Grade 5th Grade 6th Grade -Sustainable Development Goals (turning learning into action) -Social entrepreneurship (To investigate different types of products and purposes) -Design for Change -Recycle Unit (Junky2Funky) (Students create a classroom run business) -Tower Garden Hydroponics: (Design for Change) -Social Enterprise Edcorp -ROV Unit -Shark Tank (Students create their own products and pitch their idea to a group of businessmen) -Lead to feed (team based leadership program students take action to solve real life community issues) -TED Talk Club (Students claim their voice, share ideas, and participate in a global conversation)

Showcase Day In lieu of Horizons Day, we will have a Showcase evening where each grade will be inviting parents to view a project they have been working on. This will be a special day where the students can select a project they would like to highlight celebrating their accomplishments. Students will still have the opportunity to participate in hands on activities that typically occurred at Horizons Day at S.T.E.A.M nights throughout the district.

Parent Volunteers Parent volunteers are welcomed and helpful for holiday parties and Showcase Day. If you are interested in volunteering please email me and I will add you as a volunteer. If I have numerous volunteers , I will split the time so every parent has a chance.

Homework Classwork that is not finished or if a student would like to continue on a class project at home. Flipgrid: a video social platform requiring students to create their own video response. Students may need access to a computer for research purposes for a short amount of time. All homework is a continuation of classwork and should NOT be stressful! Please contact me if your son/daughter is having a difficult time with anything.

Parent Conferences Parents for grades 3-5 will receive a Horizons progress report in December. Parents of 6th grade students do not get a progress report however, if you have any questions or concerns please contact me to schedule a conference. There will be no conferences unless a parent would like to contact me to schedule one.

Grading Information Students in grades 3-5 will receive progress reports each trimester. Progress reports show a continuum of expected skills for: critical thinking, creativity, task commitment, attitude, and homework. 6th grade students do not receive grades or progress reports. Feel free to contact me throughout the year with any questions or concerns that may arise.

Competitions There will be competitions we will be entering and will need parental consent forms to be filled and submitted. You will be notified with all competitions and deadlines. Many competitions require video submissions if you do not want your child to be filmed please let me know and they will not take part in the video portion. Some competitions may require future travel plans, if this is an issue please feel free to discuss this with me in private.
