Intro to Engineering Design Setting up a Decision Matrix in Google Drive

Learning Objectives Be able to create a Decision Matrix using a Google Docs Spreadsheet Be able to ‘Share’ the spreadsheet with the virtual team so the team can provide real-time input

Getting Started One of your team members will need to log into a Gmail account

Getting to Google Drive 1) Click on the Grid to Open the Google Apps 2) Select Drive

Create a Spreadsheet 1) Select Create 2) Select Spreadsheet

Create the Spreadsheet 1) Enter Specifications and Constraints in cell A1 Note the Constraints and Specifications flow outside of the cell. To make it look better, we need to have the text WRAP.

1) Select the Cells to have wrap. Wrapping the Text 2) Select Format 1) Select the Cells to have wrap. 3) Select Wrap text. Note: You can select a range of cells before Wrap Test option to set this for several cells at once.

Enter Specifications With Spacing 1) Enter the Specification in the Top Row 3) To change the column width drag the line between the column titles to the desired width. 2) Create one column per team member for each specification/constraint. This example is set for a team of four.

Merge Headers Select the Spec/Constraint header: Left click and drag to select the cells to merge. 2) Select Format->Merge cells -> Merge All

Finish Entering Specifications/Constraints If the team has not determined the Specifications and Constraints, these can be added later. After the spreadsheet is shared, each teammate can enter information. Eventually you will enter 4-5 Specifications and 4-5 constraints per person. Make sure to have the extra columns. Your team will use these to enter scores

Create a Bar Below Headers 2) Fill Cells ‘More’ -> ‘Paint Bucket’ -> Select a color for the cells 1) Select the cells immediately below the Headers

Make a Totals Column with Formula 1) After all of the Specifications and Constraints enter ‘Totals’ for the column. 2) Create a Formula to add the values entered. =sum( Select the Cells to total )

Copy the Formula to the rest of the Proposals Select the bottom right corner of the cell with the formula. The cursor will turn into a cross. Click and drag to copy the formula.

Enter Proposals Enter your proposals

Share the Spreadsheet 1) File -> Share 2) Name it if needed

Enter Team email Addresses 2) ‘Send’ invitations to share this document

Check Have local teammates check the Shared Documents Everyone on the team can now edit the document. (Add Specifications, constraints, proposals, scores for evaluating the proposals)

Use the Decision Matrix Now have each member enter values rating the different proposals A simple method is +1 if the proposal is better than average at this specification 0 if it is average -1 if I is below average Use the results to help in selecting a direction for the team. Also make a screen capture and include it in your individual PowerPoint

What is Turned in by Individuals: A PowerPoint with the following Team members/Schools (Monday5/23) Project Name (Monday 5/23) Team Norm Summary (Wednesday 5/25) Interaction: File/Folder Naming Standards Define the problem (Wednesday 5/25) Use the design brief to generate Constraints and Specifications Constraints: What it can’t do/be (Team picks top 4-5) Specifications: What it can do/be (Team picks top 4-5) Generate Concepts (5/23 – 5/27) At least three sketches/member on Isometric Paper for proposals Take pictures of your proposals in include in PowerPoint and share with partners Develop a Solution (Tuesday 5/27) Use a decision matrix to evaluate the design proposals based on your Specifications and Constraints Include Decision Matrix in PowerPoint Create Part files in Inventor Construct and Test a Prototype (6/1 - 6/3) Delegate who will do what on your team. Look at extensions, and enhancements that go beyond the minimum requirements Create a CAD model and complete set of working drawings for your solutions Put Screen Captures into the PowerPoint Assembly/Animation (E.C.) Showing how all of the parts fit together and interchangeability of enhancements as appropriate Screen Capture of Assembly included in the PowerPoint Create a Team PowerPoint Presentation and tri-fold brochure (optional) marketing your solution (Monday 6/3) Prepare your presentation to the Shark Tank Class Presentations (6/6)
