Uncertainty and Traceability Definitions The term “’uncertainty of measurement’” denotes a “parameter, associated with the result of a measurement, that characterises the dispersion of the values that could reasonably be attributed to the measurand (GUM).” ‘Traceability’ is defined as the “property of the result of a measurement or the value of a standard whereby it can be related to stated references, usually national or international standards, through an unbroken chain of comparisons all having stated uncertainties” (ISO)

Uncertainty How, what and at which level? Characterising uncertainty Presenting uncertainty information At what level (scene, tile, pixel)

Uncertainty Satellite based surface reflectance Sources of uncertainty: Sensor Correction approaches Ancillary input data

Uncertainty Field measurement of surface reflectance Sources of uncertainty: Instruments Operator techniques Target surface Measurement approach Environment
