PROPERTIES OF SOUND PROPERTIES OF SOUND

REFLECTION When sound is reflected an echo is formed. If the echo follows very close to the original sound its called a reverberation.

PROPERTIES OF SOUND Acoustics- the study and control of sound.

To eliminate any reflected sound audiologist use an anechoic chamber.

USES FOR REFLECTION

REFRACTION Sound waves will bend when there is a change in the temperature of the air.

INTERFERENCE Interference of sound waves is the reason for beats in music and sonic booms. Waves experience constructive interference when the plane travels faster than the speed of sound.

Constructive Interference Regular Speed Increased speed Constructive Interference http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6o0zmafxTmE Faster than sound BOOM

DOPPLER EFFECT The apparent change in sound frequency as an object moves. ☺ As the car moves toward you the pitch increases. ☺As it moves away, the pitch decreases

RESONANCE When an object vibrates at its natural frequency due to another vibration. Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the state of Washington November 7, 1940
