In the aftermath of disaster, we will ensure that no vulnerable family will be without shelter. ShelterBox is a cutting edge international disaster relief charity that hand delivers emergency shelter and supplies for families devastated by natural disasters and conflict We have a commitment not just to those affected by disaster and conflict but to everyone who supports us and works with us to bring about real change.   As an organization we are impatient to see a world where no family is left without shelter when disaster strikes.

OUR DETERMINATION Since 2000, ShelterBox has: Responded to over 300 disasters Worked in over 100 countries Helped well over 1,200,000 people Become a leader in humanitarian shelter provision ShelterBox is the only international organization that focuses solely on emergency shelter provision. We will do whatever it takes to ensure that no family goes without shelter. Since 2000, our determination has led us to provide shelter to more than 1.2 million people all over the world who have been robbed of their homes by disaster. This determination is driving our evolution into an organization that aims to reach more than a million people every year.

We always put families first and we don’t believe that one size fits all We make sure that every piece of aid we give out helps promote community recovery Our ShelterBox Response Team volunteers assess each situation and work with families, local Rotary Clubs and Community groups to determine the need and ensure we are providing the right solution.   Sometimes this means that the aid we provide will come packed in our iconic ShelterBoxes, these may contain one of our range of tents. Other times, our ShelterKits may be a better solution. Its all about providing the right tools for the given situation.

THE SHELTERBOX Our iconic green ShelterBoxes are designed for people who have lost everything They contain a family sized tent (max 5 people) and everything a family needs to recover The contents vary depending on the disaster but can include: mosquito nets, solar lights, water purification, blankets, tool kits, cooking equipment and more We are always updating what goes into the box to make sure we are providing the best aid – our new water filter will actually stop allowing water to flow though when it can’t get all the bacteria out so that no one ever has unsafe drinking water ShelterBox returns to disaster stricken areas to assess how our aid has held up and gain valuable feedback from our beneficiaries to ensure we are sending the best aid options

OUR TENTS Standard Relief OASE FLEX 3 UN Specification Our tents allow us to be flexible and provide a solution for every climate -standard (Top photo): family of 5, good to 100km/hr winds, monsoon rains -Oase (Second Photo): best hot weather tent, large covered porch for shade, better ventilation -Flex 3 (Third Photo): best winter tent, can have a stove inside, triple insulated, floor can be stuffed with straw for bedding and insulation -UN (Fourth photo): used in conflict zones – large and hardwearing but also allows us to blend in. If we provide families with one of our tents, while everyone is in UN tents, those families become a target. Also sometimes provide Midi (Not shown) - smaller version of the standard – not double walled, used for short term or restricted space

LUMINAID Solar powered Light weight Waterproof Lasts 16-32 hours on a charge (setting dependent) The LuminAID is a great example of how we are always upgrading and improving our aid. Show a LuminAid if you have one The light blows up like a pillow, lasts 16 hours on a charge, light weight and easy to carry, waterproof 2 in every box People often don’t think about how important light is after disasters. Animals are displaced to, debris etc, so just going to the bathroom at night can be dangerous. Also, for kids to do their homework etc. Light is also important for protection in refugee camps, and makes women less likely to be assaulted.

SHELTERKIT The ShelterKit is our other non-tent shelter option. Allows us to help more families that we could in the past Kit contains heavy duty reinforced tarp, tools, and building materials (screws, nails etc) We can also locally procure lumber and CGI (corrugated iron) roofing sheets Allows families to repair home or build a locally appropriate shelter Can be provided with items from the box

Meet Eliza… A great example of the benefits of ShelterKits comes from Eliza in Malawi Losing a home, through damage or total destruction, is devastating for anyone, but for some people, their home means more than bricks, mortar and memories. For people like 21-year-old Eliza, who is blind and epileptic, home is a safe place that she can navigate by touch and feel. -This is Eliza from Malawi -she is blind and looks after her small siblings -in the flooding last year she lost a wall and her roof -ShelterBox teams were able to fix her house with a ShelterKit so she could stay somewhere she knows by touch

SCHOOL BOXES ShelterBox also provides SchoolBoxes – essentially a classroom in a box for 50 students Each box contains chalk, chalkboard paint, a radio, geometry kits, rulers, paper etc, as well as 50 backpacks with individual school supplies for reach student. We use SchoolBoxes in conflict zones were kids haven’t been able to go to school, possibly for years, and also sometimes after disasters when schools are destroyed.

TAKE ACTION FUNDRAISE Host a fundraiser at your school! It can be something as big as a school wide event or as small as a bake sale – every bit makes a difference! START A SHELTERBOX CLUB Bring together students to create a ShelterBox Club in your school. Fundraise and raise awareness about our work in your school. CHALLENGE: OFF THE GRID Go Off the Grid for 12 hours and help ensure no family goes without shelter. Off the Grid is a friendly competition between Canadian schools and clubs to raise funds to ensure no family goes without shelter. The top fundraising school will receive a visit from Survivorman, Les Stroud! Exciting new challenge. When disasters strike and power lines go down, families are left vulnerable, taken away from comfort, light and electricity. We want to challenge you to go without power for 12 hours. Off the Grid is a friendly competition between Canadian schools and clubs to raise funds to ensure no family goes without shelter. The top fundraising school will receive a visit from Survivorman, Les Stroud! The money you raise by taking the Off the Grid challenge will make a real difference to families in crisis. Tents, ShelterKits, cooking equipment, solar lights, hammers, rope and water purification units are just some of the things you can help provide to families who need it most.

ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE? shelterboxcanada.org/offthegrid The challenge can be accepted by single students, classes, clubs or entire schools! Students get together and pick a 12 hour period, it could be over the weekend, throughout a school day or into the evening with an entire school or club. The rules are simple. No electricity and nothing with an ‘on’ button.
