01 | Project Overview

Transit Service in Sonoma County Public Transit Gaps The forecasted year 2035 commute period trips within and out of the county (Figure 13) highlights changes in commute patterns from the year 2005 (Figure 10). It is expected that intercity commute trips will increase, while out of county and internal city trips will decline. Expanding transit service and implementing a range of TDM policies and programs will be important strategies to meet new commute and travel needs. Public transportation in the county provides service in key residential and commercial areas with limited service in rural areas and between cities. With limited resources for expansive networks, urban transit routes generally provide service along main corridors. Many communities of concern and PDAs are served by transit; however, connections for many users are indirect and infrequent. Transit improvements should focus on expanding the bus network to provide direct connections between commuters and key destinations, and increasing frequency during peak demand periods.
