Objective: Students will be able to: Correct run on sentences by taking C.notes and completing practice sentences

What is a Run-on? 2+ complete sentences run together as one. (mistakenly use a “,” instead of “;” or “.”) Confusing  don’t show where one idea begins and the other ends (DON’T COPY) Examples: Sea horses are actually fish they have gills and fins. Some sea horses are partially transparent, you might not see them in an aquarium.

Two Types of Run-ons: A fused sentence = no punctuation between the two sentences. A comma splice = only a comma between the two sentences. (DON’T COPY) Which run-on below is which? Sea horses are actually fish they have gills and fins. Some sea horses are partially transparent, you might not see them in an aquarium.

Explain each: 1. Sea horses are actually fish they have gills and fins. 2. Some sea horses are partially transparent, you might not see them in an aquarium. COPY: 1.The first run-on is a ___ ___ because it ___. 2.The second run-on is a ___ ___ because it ___.

Don’t copy. Identify the Run-ons. Write “C” = correct or “R” =run-on After school I feed the gerbils Kerry takes care of the fish. The crab hurried into the water because it had seen a large bird nearby. Coach Mendez runs difficult practices, her teams usually win their games. RCR

How do I fix a run-on? Do one of two things… Cut it apart Put an endmark at the end of the first sentence/ Capitalize the first word of the 2nd sentence Join it properly Use a comma and a coordinating conjunction Use a semicolon “;”

Practice (use different techniques) We had a big anniversary party for my grandparents, they have been married 45 years. The Japanese restaurant is popular it serves crowds of hungry diners every night. In the summertime that bush has purple flowers the bees and butterflies are attracted to it.

Fix each with a different technique Lee plays basketball he is also on the tennis team. Ms. Lowe tried to grow tomatoes most of them were eaten by bugs. Tomorrow we can walk to the beach, we can go to a movie if it rains.
