Martin MATH 6A – PER 2 & 6 SCIENCE/HEALTH – PER 3 &4 PIRATE COLLEGE ACADEMY Period 1 STANDARD 6NS 2.1 You will solve problems involving addition and subtraction of positive fractions and explain why a particular operation was used for a given situation. 3.a. Students will know that energy can be carried from one place to another by heat flow or by wave, including water, light and sound waves, or by moving objects. 2NS 4.1 Students will know when all fractional parts are included, such as four-fourths, the result is equal to the whole and one. LEARNING OBJECTIVE Solve simple problems, including ones arising in concrete situations, involving the addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers and express answers in the simplest form. Students will know that energy is the cause of all the changes they observe in the world around them. Write fractions represented by a drawing of parts of figure; represent a given fraction using drawings. AGENDA Introduce Chapter 5-2, Adding and Subtracting fractions. Show brain pop on adding and subtracting fractions. Introduce Chapter 3, lesson 1 Forms of Energy. Students copy the Chart on page 123 and answer left side before they read. Introduce equivalent fractions and equivalent forms of one lesson 2-1. DO NOW ACTIVITY Copy and answer the five questions in the warm up practice exercise on the board. Copy the vocabulary words and define: energy, kinetic energy, potential energy, elastic potential energy, and thermal energy. Do Example 1 and 2, Your Turn on page 35. HOMEWORK Start reading Adding and Subtracting fractions on page 236 and do problems 1-22 on page 238 to 239. Start reading Lesson 3-1, Forms of Energy on page 101-111 and answer the 8 questions on page 130. Start reading Lesson 2-1, Equivalent Fractions from page 34 to 40. TEST Adding and Subtracting fractions. You will have 10 problems on test. Test is on Chapter 1, lesson 3, Forms of Energy. Test is on comparing equivalent fractions. You will have 10 problems. EXTRA CREDIT Make the foldable on page 228. Label on side with lesson 5-2 and use it to place your notes on it. Keep this foldable in your folder and add more lessons when get to them later on in the school year Make a model showing the different forms of energy. You can use your text book or check out a library book. Make a presentation on Friday. Make six fraction pies and color the pieces and show me what fraction each pie represents. Bring in on Thursday or Friday for extra credit.
