Studying at the University of Greenwich

History of the University In 1890 the college was founded as Woolwich Polytechnic. In 1892 the college was awarded the first CGLI certificate. Part-time courses in association with the Ministry of War begin in 1894. In 1907 it was an Institute with Recognised Teachers in the University of London. In 1935 it had the first sandwich courses in the UK with the Ministry of War. In 1969 the University amalgamated with parts of Hammersmith College of Art and Building. In 1970 Thames Polytechnic established One of the first new polytechnics. They incorporated Dartford College in 1976. They incorporated Avery Hill College in 1985. They incorporated Garnett College in 1987. They incorporated some science courses from Goldsmiths College in 1988. In 1992 it became the University of Greenwich In 1993 they incorporated Thames College of Health Care Studies In 1996 they incorporated Natural Resources Institute (NRI) and established campus at Medway In 1999 they established Maritime Greenwich Campus

The University Campus Avery Hill History Is Built in 86 acres of parkland. Huge amount of 19th and 20th century buildings. Almost 6,000 students based here. The land is originally part of Eltham Palace Estate. It was built by Colonel John North as his home in 1890. The Campus Library was the Great Hall. It became a teacher training college. It was then incorparted to the University in 1985. Chatham Maritime, 5 mins walk from the campus, is a major visitor attraction Historic Rochester with the second oldest Cathedral in England and a Norman castle. Charles Dickens featured the town many times in his writings.
