Savanna Today I will learn about the Savanna because I need to know the characteristics that Scientists use to classify biomes.

General Description A savanna is a rolling grassland scattered with shrubs and isolated trees, which can be found between a tropical rainforest and desert biome. Most savannas have a long dry season and very few trees survive during this time.

Location Savannas are found in parts of Africa, India, and South America.

Climate and Precipitation Savannas have a long dry season. During this time, grasses dry out and turn yellow. Due to the long dry season, there are frequent brush fires that can spread quickly throughout the land. Average Temperature: Dry Season: 34°C (93°F) Wet Season: 16°C (61°F)

Climate and Precipitation Average Yearly Rainfall: 150 cm (59 in.) In the Summer there is lots of rain. An average of 15 to 25 inches of rain falls during this time. However, in the Winter only about 4 inches of rain falls during this time.

Animals Elephants Giraffes Zebras Wildebeests

Plants Senegal Gum Acacia Bermuda Grass Gum Tree Euclyptus River Bushwillow

Adaptations Grasses have deep roots which survive many months without water The savanna has many large herbivores because they can move around and eat the plentiful grass. Most of the animals on the savanna have long legs or wings to be able to go on long migrations. Many burrow under ground to avoid the heat or raise their young.
