‘Kat Wolfe Investigates’ Year 5 - overview sheet ‘Kat Wolfe Investigates’ Possible Written Outcomes or Incidental Writing Opportunities Prediction- based on pictures, the book trailer, blurb and front cover of the book. Diary – based on chapter 10 when Kat goes to Avalon Heights. A diary entry detailing her thoughts and feelings on the sudden disappearance of Ramon Corazon. Discussion – Is it right for Edith to put in a care home? Looking at the views of her son, Reg, and Kat, her friend. Suspense and mystery writing- writing a piece of the story to build tension and create dramatic effect. Setting description- to encapsulate the wonder and magic of the Jurassic Coast, Dorset. Character description- of Kat Wolfe, using the animal-themed style of Lauren St John as inspiration. 1. Responding to the text • Visual Literacy: looking at specific illustrations in the book to help with meaning. Compare text with ‘Magician’s Elephant’. • Book talk: does the book remind of any other stories you have read? Similarities and differences. •Book talk: find the clues about feelings of characters •Visual Literacy: look at page ? Turn the volume up: what would be heard? Find and copy examples of… •Writer talk: look closely at the language that adds detail to the text and engages the reader. Find strong verbs, effective adjectives, specific nouns and similes, metaphors. • Writer talk: look closely at the sentence starters. Find all the time adverbs and adverbials. How to they impact on the reader? Reading around the word to interpret the meaning in context. Looking at synonyms and antonyms of words used. 2. Capturing Ideas • Role play and hot seating – role playing the different characters and how they would be feeling. • Freeze frame scenes from Kat discovering the abandoned scene at Avalon Heights. What can you see? Encourage children to use imaginative vocabulary to describe pictures from the text. • Debate – should Kat let her Grandfather back into her life? • Annotate notes with generalisers and time adverbs/adverbials • Use planning format to group related material and decide on sub-headings or sections. • Experiment with adverbs, adverbial phrases, fronted adverbials, subjunctive sentences. Contextualised Grammar Teaching • Modal verbs and adverbs of possibility to be used in predictions. Teaching of better vocabulary to use to describe in expanded noun phrases. Different types of sentences to use for effect, especially in the suspense and mystery writing. • Time conjunctions and adverbial phrases. Converting verbs using prefixes and suffixes. Use of parenthesis to add detail in descriptive writing. Subjunctive form to add formality to the discussion text. Sentence Games Changing grammar and vocabulary in sentences to improve quality. Paragraph organisation game on BBC SPAG Adding the fronted adverbial Adding adverbial phrases to the beginning and end of main cause. Verbs with prefixes Converting nouns and adjectives into verbs by adding suffixes Understanding terminology for different clauses Brackets, dashes, semi colons and colons Guided Reading Possibilities • Non-fiction texts- exploring animals within the book such as Capuchin monkeys and Savannah cats. • Identify and discuss features of text types for final written outcome. Level of text can be pitched at each groups’ level, ensuring both access and challenge. Lots of opportunities for giving meanings of words in context. Extensive vocabulary and imagery in novel. Clarifying concepts and identifying themes. How presentational features impact on meaning. Question and answer, discussion of viewpoints and PEE. 4.
