Water Cycle Review

Predict what will happen to the motion of the water particles and the reason why you think this will occur.

The speed of the particles will increase because the thermal energy of the water in the beaker increases.

The beaker has been allowed to stay on the burner during the whole class. By the end of the class, you observe that there is less liquid water in the beaker. The beaker isn’t leaking. Explain what is happening.

The water particles became a gas and are now part of the air (water vapor).

After turning off the burner, you add 5 ice cubes to the hot water in the beaker. The ice cubes melt quickly. What is happening to the thermal energy of the ice cubes as they melt?

The thermal energy of the ice cubes is increasing.

Name the process. Evaporation/Transpiration Describe where ONE example of this happens on Earth. Lakes/Ground or Plants/Trees to the atmosphere. Describe two ways these examples are similar. They both have a change in state from liquid to a gas. They are both caused by the increase in thermal energy.

Word Bank: Liquid increases gas Air decreases water bottle The drops of liquid are coming from the _________. They are formed as the motion of the particles in the air _______________. This changes in motion causes ______ in the air to change from a _________to a ________________.

Word Bank: Liquid increases gas Air decreases water bottle The drops of liquid are coming from the air . They are formed as the motion of the particles in the air decrease. This changes in motion causes water in the air to change from a gas to a liquid.

After a few minutes, you notice that larger drops of water are starting to drip down the outside of the bottle. What (driver) is causing the liquid water to move this way?

The force of gravity is acting on the water drops. Small water drops forming on the outside of the bottle taken from the refrigerator The force of gravity is acting on the water drops.

Small water drops forming on the outside of the bottle taken from the refrigerator Name the process. Condensation Describe where ONE example of this happens on Earth. Water vapor as a gas in the atmosphere forms. These particles join together and form clouds. Dew forming on the grass. Describe two ways these examples are similar. Both of these examples involve change in state from a gas to a liquid. Both of these examples are caused by thermal energy decreasing.

Large water drops forming on the outside of the bottle taken from the refrigerator Name the process. Run off / precipitation Describe where ONE example of this happens on Earth. Water flowing over the ground or water falling from the clouds Describe two ways these examples are similar. Water moving from a higher elevation to a lower elevation (water moving downward). Both of these examples are similar because of the force of gravity acting on the water.

Reservoirs Name six reservoirs

Reservoirs Name six reservoirs Cloud Lake, ocean, river Plants, trees Groundwater/soil Atmosphere (water vapor) Ice, snow, glaciers

Processes Name six processes Runoff Infiltration Evaporation Transpiration Condensation Precipitation

Water Cycle Questions What are the two most important causes of the movement of water through the global water cycle? Energy from the Sun Gravity

Water Cycle Questions Over time the total amount of water present in the global water cycle: Stays the same

Water Cycle Questions Why does rain fall from the clouds? The tiny droplets of liquid water that make up clouds combine into larger droplets, and those droplets fall as rain due to the force of gravity.

This air temperature makes water particles move freely to the point that they evaporate.

This air temperature makes water particles motion in the air decreases and they condense.

An example of evaporation

When water evaporates, it turns into this form.

Steam rising from a boiling pot is an example of this.

The source of energy that drives/controls the water cycle.

After condensation occurs, water droplets form these.

Rain is the only liquid form of precipitation Rain is the only liquid form of precipitation. Name 2 of the 3 solid forms.

2 examples of condensation

When clouds become heavy from condensation, this process occurs.

Large body of salt water

Water that is found underground

Water that ends up in rivers and lakes

Two sources of water pollution

Where most of Earth’s water is found

Water that falls from the sky

The process in which liquid water is turned into water vapor

The process in which water vapor is changed back into liquid water

The collecting of water in streams, lakes, and oceans

The process by which some water within plants evaporates into the atmosphere

Movement of water from the ground to the air and back to the ground

2 ways in which we can conserve water

Glaciers and snow from mountaintops contribute to the water cycle by doing this

To save water

2 places (besides oceans and lakes) that water can be stored or accumulated
