Career Research Project Presentation- Neurologist Student English 8H, Period 5 Whitehurst December 8, 2015

Career Career Choice: Neurologist What it is: A specialized physician who diagnoses and treats illnesses and diseases that affect the nervous system. The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, and the complex system of neurons extending throughout the body. What the job is: A neurologist is a doctor that diagnoses and treats medical conditions related to the neurological system.

Salary Income during Residency Income after Residency Average yearly income w/o tax deducted $61,218.10 $235,099 Average yearly income w/ tax deducted $48,974.52 $188,079.20 Monthly Income $5,101.51 $19,591.58 Take Home Salary $4,081.21 $15,673.26

Education Education Needed- Four years college undergrad Four years medical school One or more years as an intern At least three years in residency An optional one to eight year in fellowship Training in sub-fields of neurology such as neurophysiology, brain injury, epilepsy, and vascular neurology This career is a good fit for me because I love science, math, medicine, and the challenge to always learn. I chose neurology because it’s a part of medicine that has changed the most in the last 20 years. Scientists are always learning more about the brain and its functions.

Housing Not really a place I want to live in; I haven’t made a decision yet. Area: Within 20 miles of Stanford University Austin Commons 1,000 square feet; 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms Monthly Rent: $1,345-$1,445; Deposit: $850 Woodland Park 927 square feet; 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms Monthly Rent $2,235-$2,335; Deposit: $700 Average monthly rent: $1,840; Average deposit: $775 Average yearly rent: $22,080 I hope to share the apartment with another medical resident…we’ll both be so busy that we’ll almost never be home. I was surprised how expensive housing was in the Stanford area.

Utilities Water: $90 Trash: $31.64 Gas: $30 Electricity: $42 Cell Phone: $150 Cable/Internet: $120 Monthly Bill: $463.64 Yearly Bill: $5,563.68 I’ll probably cut some of the cost with a roommate. I may have to give up some of the cable to save money as well.

Groceries Average Monthly Groceries: $210 Average Yearly Groceries: $2,520 I thought grocery shopping was pretty fun, but I wasn’t aware of all the decisions I would need to make regarding brands and specifics of the products. It took longer than I thought it would.

Dinner For dinner, I cooked beef and vegetable stir fry with rice. I’ve made it before so it was no big deal to make. We had egg rolls with it…ymmm! However, it’s the first time my mom actually left the kitchen while I was cooking. Of course, I had to do all the clean-up…hate it! I had my little sister help me. My family liked it, and it was good. Did not have any difficulties cooking.

Vehicle 2018 Honda Civic Sedan EX-L Color: Dyno Blue Pearl Average Overall Cost: $24,240 Average Monthly Payment: $333.83 Average Yearly Payment: $4,005.96 I loved choosing my car…I felt like an adult making these decisions. I REALLY liked the Dyno Blue Pearl…I saw it in the dealer…it’s MY color!!! This is the car I wanted, but it will have to wait a few years.

Insurance Geico Monthly Cost: $128.73 Yearly Cost: $1,544.80 $500 deductible Bodily Injury Liability: $25,000/$50,000 Property Damage Liability: $25,000 State Farm Premium: Monthly Cost: $219.94 Yearly Cost: $2,639.28 Bodily Injury Liability: $100,000/$300,000 Property Damage Liability: $100,000 Average Monthly Cost:$174.34 Average Yearly Cost: $2,092.84 This was one of the most difficult areas because I didn’t really understand some of the terms like “Deductible,” “Bodily Injury/Liability” and “Property Damage Liability.” My dad explained it to me…now it makes sense.

College Loans and Savings For my college loans, I simply took the average that we were given, $320 per month. I know that my Medical School loans would be substantially more, but I did not include that in my chart and my budget because I don’t know the amounts. For my savings, my goal is to set aside 10% of my gross income each month to put into savings. That will be more challenging earlier in my career because I’ll be earning less money. On the other hand, I need to continue to save for a home and other large purchases.

Final Financial Statement Monthly during Residency Monthly after Residency Annual during Residency Annual after Residency Income (after taxes) $4,081.21 $15,673.26 $48,974.52 $188,079.20 Housing -$1,840 -$22,080 Utilities -$463.64 -$5,563.68 Grocery -$210 -$2,520 Car Payment -$333.83 -$4,005.96 Insurance -$174.34 -$2,092.84 School Loans and Savings -$320 -$400 Leftover $339.40 $12,631.45 $12,005.04 $148,816.72 Although my income will be limited in the first few years, I will be making substantially more money as I progress in my experience and additional certifications. I also anticipate conducting and publishing research in the future.
