Presentation transcript:

The Language of persuasion.

The objective of this class is: To revise the language of persuasion and it’s guidelines. To recognise what you are looking for and what the examiner is looking for. To be able to use the style for Question A, B and the compositions, if you wish. But first, a small warm-up:

I want pizza. Write three appeals why we should get pizza. Appeal – i.e. Emotional, not logical Guilt me, flatter me, manipulate me Think of a slogan

Can’t stress this enough: What this means in this section...

L.O.P. Checklist. Language – 30% : Did the writer use emotive language or make an appeal to the reader’s emotions? (This is a choice of words: calling an event a joyous occasion or horrifying clusterf**k. Remember any use of foul language loses marks too.) Did the writer make a valid argument? You still need to have a point, link it logically to other points and, yes, you can use facts and statistics still. Did the writer engage with the reader? Are various tones and techniques used? (listed on sheet)

Purpose – 30%, Coherence – 30% : Try now to answer a question B. on the sheet provided. Remember that a third of you marks simply go for engaging with THE SET TASK (i.e. Understanding what the question is asking) and a third goes for STAYING ON MESSAGE. Note: Language of Persuasion and Argument questions can be easy to confuse. The question will mention serious topics and will be directed at serious people if it’s the latter. Lot’s of the time the word ‘Persuasive’ will appear if it wants you to use as well.

Homework Focus on your one essay this week to prepare for the exam. Use the notes to check or improve said essay. Next week, hand up the essay you plan to write for the leaving cert.
