Population & migration UNIT 4: HUMAN GEOGRAPHY World Population Now

Seven Billion: How Did We Get So Big? Why do you think the population has recently started to grow so quickly? What are some reasons people are living longer? What makes an area good for people to live and survive there?

Let’s define POPULATION Why is the population always changing? Population is the total number of people who live in a specific place. The population of the world is constantly changing because people are constantly being born & dying. Births= Birth rate Deaths= Death Rate

What does population density show? Population density shows the average of how many people live per sq. mile in an area. Population density will be higher when the population in the area is higher and the amount of land is smaller

Three Types of communities TYPE 1: RURAL Large amount of land Small POPULATION (LESS PEOPLE) Farms TYPE 2: SUBURBAN Medium amount of land Medium POPULATION Neighborhoods TYPE 3: URBAN Small amount of land Large POPULATION Skyscrapers & apartment buildings Which type of community has the largest population?

Impact of Population Growth What is ONE impact of population growth? The world’s population has been increasing rapidly over the last century (100 years). CHALLENGES DUE TO RAPID INCREASE: As the population increases it becomes difficult to provide the basic needs food, clean water, shelter OVERCROWDING: Many people move to the cities to make a better life for themselves, but then people are fighting each other for resources they need to survive.

WOULD YOU BE HERE WITHOUT MIGRATION? Think about this question and be ready to discuss: Would you be here without migration?

Let’s define MIGRATION What would cause someone to migrate? Migration Is The process of people relocating to a new region [could be for positive or negative reasons] Geographers study 3 things when analyzing Migration: What causes migration? Which places have more push factors? Which places have more pull factors?

IMAGE ANALYSIS & team discussion Prior to learning about Human Migration today look at this image. Why do people migrate? Share your ideas with your team when you teacher tells you to. Do NOT worry about being right or wrong, just try!

PEOPLE WHO MIGRATE IMMIGRANT What is a refugee? EMIGRANT REFUGEE a person who comes to live permanently in another country. [I=IN] EMIGRANT A person who leaves their own country i to live in another country. [E=EXIT] REFUGEE A person who leaves their own country in order to settle permanently live in another because their country is not safe. What is a refugee?

WHY DO PEOPLE MOVE FROM PLACE TO PLACE What is the difference between a PUSH and PULL factor? REASONS FOR MIGRATING Push- Pull Factors. These can be Environmental, economic, cultural, or political. Push Factors: NEGATIVE Causes people to LEAVE an area→ WAR Pull Factors: POSITIVE ATTRACTS people to COME to an area→ SAFETY

Push & pull discussion question Which PUSH Factor listed on the left would make you want to leave the most? Which PULL Factor listed on the right would make you want to move there the most?

PUSH FACTORS = NEGATIVE What are the 4 types of push factors? ENVIRONMENTAL [LAND] PUSH FACTOR UNSTABLE WEATHER RISK OF NATURAL DISASTERS (Hurricanes, drought, etc) ECONOMIC [$] PUSH FACTOR HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT → NOT ENOUGH JOBS FOR all PEOPLE POVERTY → NO MONEY = HIGHER CRIME AREAS CULTURAL [RELIGION] PUSH FACTOR LIMITED PERSONAL FREEDOM→ RELIGION SLAVERY→ UNFAIR SOCIAL CLASSES POLITICAL [GOVERNMENT] PUSH FACTOR UNSTABLE GOVERNMENT → WAR NO PROTECTION

PULL FACTORS = POSITIVE Which of the 4 type of pull factors do you think impacts people the most? ENVIRONMENTAL PULL FACTORS WARMER & SAFER CLIMATES PLENTY OF RESOURCES ECONOMIC [$] PULL FACTORS JOB OPPORTUNITIES [CREATES MORE WEALTH] AFFORDABLE HOUSING & LIVING CULTURAL PULL FACTORS PERSONAL FREEDOMS→ CHOICE IN RELIGION RETURN TO HOMELAND/FAMILY POLITICAL [GOVT] PULL FACTORS STABLE/STRONG GOVERNMENT LESS WARS & STRONG MILITARY FOR PROTECTION

IS THIS A PUSH OR PULL FACTOR When the word is called, point to either the push or pull side depending what you think it is. PULL EducationAL OPPORTUNITIES Poor Economy Crop Failure Wealth Poverty Fertile Soil [Good Farmland] War Personal Freedom

POSITIVE EFFECTS OF MIGRATION Why do you think migration is positive for the USA? CULTURAL Adds diversity [NOT EVERYONE IS THE SAME] new traditions, food, religions are spread to the area ECONOMIC (Money) Brings in workers with different skills POLITICAL Contributions that lead to citizenship

NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF MIGRATION What negative effects can discrimination of immigrants have on a country? CULTURAL Discrimination due differences and not understanding others. ECONOMIC Jobs are harder to find with more competition POLITICAL Immigrants are viewed as unwanted or dangerous, so they are treated badly

INTERVIEW OF STUDENTS WHO MIGRATED What pull factors did you hear mentioned? What push factors were mentioned? Do you think it was very brave for these teenagers to move across the world in hopes for a better life? Why?

MIGRATION Map Analysis

MIGRATION Map Analysis What countries have the most people leaving them? [List 2-3] What countries are taking in the most immigrants? [List 2-3] Which countries have both people leaving and coming? [List 2-3] Why do you think people are both leaving and coming to these places? Based on the % of the map, which country has the most immigrants [people coming in]? NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF MIGRATION
