Unit 3 Mini-Notes Main Idea: The Spanish, Mexicans, and Anglo Americans all had different purposes and methods of settlement in Texas from the late 1500s to the early 1800s.

What were the Spanish purposes for and methods of settlement? Lay claim to Texas for Spain…more land, more power Convert the Natives to a brand of Christianity called Catholicism Spread Spanish culture (customs, language, etc.) Method Build missions, presidios, towns, and ranches to secure land from enemies

What were the Mexican purposes for and methods of settlement? Increase population in Northern Mexico (Coahuila y Tejas) Provide new economic opportunities/profits for Mexico Method Empresario grants Support towns financially Encourage establishment of large cattle ranches and small businesses
