*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) Loving One, even though we say “it’s all about you,” too often we are thinking: “it’s all about me.” You call us to a faith that asks deep and full commitment,

and unfortunately we choose the partial option and unfortunately we choose the partial option. Today we face the challenge which true commitment brings: are we willing to offer our whole selves to you in service?

We would like to think that we can do that, but we know how many times we have turned away from service and instead focused on our own desires. Remind us of the commitment you would have us give

to be disciples. Strengthen our hearts to be fully yours to be disciples. Strengthen our hearts to be fully yours. Forgive our stubbornness and fears. Lead us forward, gracious Lord, up these steps toward the Cross.

(silence is observed for reflection and prayer)

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON L: Hear the Good News: In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we learn that God’s love has no bounds. In Christ we are forgiven, and are empowered to begin anew!

Friends, believe the Good News of the Gospel Friends, believe the Good News of the Gospel. P: In Jesus Christ all are forgiven. Amen.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 22:23-31

You who fear the Lord, praise him You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him; stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! For he did not despise or abhor the affliction of the afflicted; he did not hide his face from me, but heard when I cried to him.

From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will pay before those who fear him. The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord. May your hearts live for ever! All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord;

and all the families of the nations shall worship before him and all the families of the nations shall worship before him. For dominion belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations. To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, and I shall live for him.

Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord, and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that he has done it.

SCRIPTURE READING: Mark 8:27-38

Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that I am?’ And they answered him, ‘John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.’

He asked them, ‘But who do you say that I am He asked them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered him, ‘You are the Messiah.’ And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests,

and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things

but on human things.’ He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake,

and for the sake of the gospel, will save it and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed

L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God! when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’ L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.1 Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.2 Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies, but His smile quickly drives it away; Not a doubt nor a fear, not a sigh nor a tear, can abide while we trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.4 Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.5 Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet, or we’ll walk by His side in the way; What He says we will do, where He sends we will go – never fear, only trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.5 Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
