FIVE CAMPUSES – ONE RUTGERS-NB Felicia E. McGinty, Ed.D. Executive Vice Chancellor of Administration and Planning
Context of the Campus Rutgers was founded in 1766 as one of the nine Colonial Colleges Today we celebrate 253 years of existence and impact The campus is: geographically dispersed and diverse The size of a mid-sized city Dependent on mass transportation to move about and relies on a network of public roadways The Raritan River is a central feature of the region & campus
The Evolution of a Complex Campus New Brunswick campus grew on an ad hoc basis and by opportunity Not the product of a grand vision Centralized planning is a relatively new phenomenon Establishment of multiple colleges and rapid growth create problems Academic realignment has streamlined the organization, still there is work to be done.

1956 Rutgers Becomes The State University Rutgers and the State enter into a compact (the “Rutgers law of 1956”) whereby Rutgers becomes the state university of New Jersey. The Board of Governors, with six of its 11 members appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the senate, and five of its members appointed by the Board of Trustees, is created to manage fiduciary oversight for the university. BOG hires and surpervises the President BOT has financial oversight and that includes our property and land
2006 Transforming Undergraduate Education (TUE) The university approves President Richard L. McCormick’s plan to reinvigorate undergraduate education at the New Brunswick Campus —a far-reaching initiative covering virtually every aspect of undergraduate learning and life. A single School of Arts and Sciences is established for all liberal arts undergraduates. Cook College is renamed the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, and Douglass becomes a Residential College. This was epic! It moved of from a federated college system to one University. So, although Rutgers has existed for more than 253 years it was not until 2006 that we truly became one university, granting degrees under one name
