Power Standard Focus 3rd Grade Standards: RL.3.6- Distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters. RL.3.7- Explain how specific aspects of a text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting). 4th Grade Standards: RL.4.4- Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology (e.g., Herculean). RL.4.7- Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the text. 5th Grade Standards: RL.5.6- Describe how a narrator's or speaker's point of view influences how events are described. RL.5.8- Compare and contrast stories in the same genre (e.g., mysteries and adventure stories) on their approaches to similar themes and topics. RL.5.9 -By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, at the high end of the Grades 4 - 5 text complexity band independently and proficiently.

Multi-Tiered System of Support
Implementation Supports School- level Response to Instruction & Problem-Solving Teams are provided additional training to ensure consistency of implementation. Phonological awareness & Phonics begins in Tier I (core) instruction (K-6). Multi-sensory interventions are provided during English Language Arts (K-6). Additional interventions are provided as needed. Classroom teachers are trained to provide interventions. Dyslexia Specialist – MSLE (Multi-Sensory Language Education) training provided by the Alabama Reading Initiative dedicated to provide support to teachers within the district.

Instructional Update District Leadership Team Learning Walks Purpose: To provide support to principals and teachers; observe instructional classroom practices; provide feedback to principals about areas of strengths and opportunities for growth; monitor student attendance and implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports Seven Teams: 1 High School Team, 2 Middle School Teams, and 4 Elem. Teams Visits to two schools on Tuesday Share feedback with Superintendent, Cabinet, and Staff Members
Instructional Update Principals have been working on their 2018-2019 Self-Monitoring Plans per the Consent Order Up to 19 areas that are monitored Measurable Strategic SMART Goals Action Steps Reading, math, progression rate, discipline, PBIS, attendance, diversity/school culture, racial solo status, honors availability, honors participation, special education referrals, community outreach/partnerships, clubs/organizations, graduation rate, AP participation, AP course grades, AP Exam scores
ICLE/Model School Professional Development Instructional Update ICLE/Model School Professional Development Increasing rigor and relevance for students Leadership Development Principals and Instructional Coaches assist teachers in creating lesson plans that are rigorous and relevant
Secondary Programs Update Over 70 Middle school teachers participated in Classworks professional development September 26 and 27 – 19 schools involved Online intervention program to assist in identifying students’ learning gaps in reading and language arts; 30-40 minutes one day per week; their Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is updated from Scantron results Program implementation will begin after Fall Break Teachers will monitor, have meaningful conversations with students, and pull real time data to inform instruction Surveys will be given to teachers for feedback in December and March

Adaptive, online math program designed to complement classroom instruction; Grades 3-8 Challenging, standards-aligned curriculum that is evidence based to promote student growth Discovery Science Techbook – 315 Science Teachers using this product Grades 3-8 Proposed Embedded Professional Development Days Two Consultants in our school district for twelve days October 22-25 October 29 – November 1 November 5-8 3:15 – 4:45 p.m. sessions will also be available

Secondary Programs Update Suite of Assessments Congratulations to our 11 students who earned the recognition as a National Merit Semi-finalist Scantron – grades 9-12; reading and math; data meetings being conducted to analyze data and create plan for students not achieving at grade level ACT Workkeys – October 2; goal is for students to achieve a silver, gold, or platinum status; grade 12 PreACT – October 2; grade 10 PSAT – October 24 – grade 11; over 150 grade 10 students have paid to participate in this assessment
