Board of Education Study Session Operations Research Board of Education Study Session September 17, 2013 Kris Karbon Carol Machak

Tonight we will address the following questions… What are the goals of the Operations Research class? How does Operations Research fit into the Troy School District’s mathematics curriculum? What kind of problems are students working on in the course?

Goals of Project Mindset: Improve upon the math students' abilities to formulate and solve multi-step problems and interpret results Improve students' attitudes toward mathematics MINDSET uses decision making tools from Industrial and Systems Engineering and Operations Research in a fourth-year high school mathematics curriculum.

Common Core Pathway

History of Operations Research in Troy Precalculus teachers were asked to pilot a Project Mindset unit and received professional development from Wayne State instructors. Teachers from Athens expressed interest in offering the full course as a fourth-year elective. 2012-13 Athens HS had 2 sections of Operations Research 2013-14 Athens HS has 4 sections of Operations Research
