LAB 3 ENZYMATIC DIGESTION

OBJECTIVES BUILDING BLOCKS OF PROTEINS, FATS, AND CARBOHYDRATES ENZYMES RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HYDROLYSIS OF PROTEINS, FATS, AND CARBOHYDRATES TEST USED TO DETERMINE IF HYDROLYSIS OF THESE MOLECULES HAVE OCCURRED.

BIOMOLECULES 4 major classes of biomolecules 1. Carbohydrates 2. Proteins 3. Lipids 4. Nucleic Acid These biomolecules are made by dehydration and they are broken apart by hydrolysis. There is a specific enzyme to catalyze each reaction

PROCESS OF DIGESTION Mechanical digestion – chewing, mixing, and peristalsis Chemical digestion – special enzymes Hydrolysis – this is added to help in the breakdown of larger food molecules into smaller molecules
