Early Life Born on September 26, 1942 in Rio Grande Valley Father & Mother were sharecroppers/fieldworkers At age eleven, family relocated to city of Hargill, entered the field to work Suffered from a rare hormonal disorder which triggered premature puberty. Father died in car accident, she continued to work the fields to support family all through her education.

General Information Cultural theorist and feminist philosopher. First author to combine these subjects in poetry, narrative and autobiographical works. Helped build multicultural feminist movement, which called for people of different races to move forward together. Writings blended styles, cultures, and languages, weaving together poetry, theory, and experimental narratives

Education & Career Received B.A. in English, Art, and Secondary Education from Pan American University  Received M.A. in English and Education from University of Texas Taught in a bilingual preschool program. Special Education program for mentally and emotionally handicapped students
