Fire Extinguisher Lore

The fire extinguisher is located in the silver case on the wall beside the door used to normally enter the lab. In case of fire, you need to understand the types and use for the fire extinguisher

Lab Fire Extinguisher To use the fire extinguisher, pull the pin, point the hose at the fire and squeeze the handles together. There are several Classes of Fire Extinguishers. You should know each type and the fires that you can use them on.

Class A Fire Extinguishers Class A Fire extinguishers are to be used on fires that involve wood, cloth and paper. Class A Fire Extinguishers are normally filled with water. If you used a Class A fire extinguisher on an electrical fire, you may get electrocuted.

Class B Fire Extinguishers Class B Fire Extinguishers can be used on fires involving liquid chemicals such as oil, paints, grease, gasoline etc. A Class A Fire extinguisher will spread many of the fires.

Class C Fire Extinguishers Class C Fire Extinguishers are designed for electrical fires. They use a powder to fight the fire.

Class D Fire Extinguishers Class D Fire extinguishers are used for metal fires, such as lithium, sodium and potassium metals. These metals are explosive if water is placed on them. So Class A fire extinguishers would make the fire worse if used on a metal fire.

Lab Fire Extinguisher The fire extinguisher in the lab is classified as an Class A, B and C Fire extinguisher so it contains no water. What type of fires can this fire extinguisher used on?
