Focus on Achievement For the Week of 9/14 – 9/18

FOA 1. Line Graph 2. Pie Chart 3. Bar Graph Match the following graphs to their correct use. 1. Line Graph 2. Pie Chart 3. Bar Graph A. used to compare things between different groups B. used to track changes over short and long periods of time C. used when you are trying to compare parts of a whole (100%)

Answers 1. B. 2. C. 3. A.

FOA What’s wrong with the graph below? There is no title. There are no labels on the x- or y-axis. What are those numbers? Who knows? There are no units on the x- or y-axis. Is this a graph of speed in miles per hour or a graph of temperature in Kelvins? Who can tell? The data points are connected, but should they be? The line is completely straight. Science is all about the real world and the real world almost never gives us straight lines. Look at the numbers on the axes. These are the numbers from the data table, but they are not in numerical order and they do not divide the axes into even intervals.

FOA A science class is doing an experiment to see if the lifespan of goldfish is related to the amount of food they feed the fish. What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? What could be a control experiment? Emmanuel and Michael want to compare the volume of several solid objects. What tools might they use to conduct this experiment? How does a scientist analyze and interpret data to make conclusions about an investigation?

Answers 1. IV: amount of food feed to the fish DV: the growth of the fish Control: keep the amount of food feed to the fish the same or do not feed the fish 2. A ruler or a graduated cylinder. 3. By putting that information into a chart or graph, a scientist could see if any if any patterns or trends exist which could explain what is happening in the investigation.

FOA A student was at a basketball tournament, and she noticed the colors of the various team’s uniforms. She observed that 3 teams that had blue colored uniforms won their games. She also observed that other teams that had red, yellow, or green colored uniforms lost their games. Therefore she concluded that blue uniforms makes teams play better on the basketball court. Which statement below identifies an error in the student’s conclusion? The cause and effect relationship between colors and players is logical. The cause and effect connection is not valid The observations were made while watching games on a Saturday. 2. A student had two identical pans. The student filled each pan with 20 grams of water before placing both pans in the same freezer. The water in Pan 1 took 20 minutes to freeze. The water in Pan 2 took 30 minutes to freeze. Which of these conclusions best explains the difference in the amount of time it took the two pans of water to freeze? The water in pan 2 had a greater final mass than the water in Pan 1. The water in Pan 2 had a greater starting volume than the water in Pan 1. The water in Pan 2 had a higher starting temperature than the water in Pan 1.

Answers B C

FOA A mineral supplement designed to prevent the common cold was given to two groups of people during a scientific study. After eight weeks, neither group reported a case of the common cold. Which of the following would have made the outcome of this study more valid? Give the supplement to both groups for only 6 weeks. Create a third group that receives 75 mg of the supplement. Create a third group that does not receive the supplement Test only one group with 150 mg of the supplement. 2. A student investigated how the mass of a plastic disk affected its motion. The student pushed five similar plastic disks, each with a different mass, across a wooden floor. The student recorded the distance each disk traveled. The investigation was repeated five times. The student concluded there was no relationship between mass and distance traveled. Which of these best describes an error in the investigation? a. The student should have used disks that were the same mass. b. The student should have pushed the disks across different surfaces. c. The student failed to control the amount of force applied. d. The student performed too few trials. Groups Dosage Group 01 50 mg/day Group 02 100 mg/day
