INTERNATIONAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT DAY: What Project Management is and what it means for your career Jo Ferguson, PMP Retired Nov 2, 2017 NEPRIS Session

Introductions: Who we are: What we will do: I’ll start by telling you a little about me; then tell us a little about you. Please share this information: Your name Your job (student, teacher, other) and grade level Where you are now (school, office, home) and City and State What we will do: This session is to help you answer 5 key questions, so you might print the slides before we begin so you can take notes on them. Also, please help us all by answering the questions I’ll ask. And, of course, if you need additional information, please feel free to ask any of us to explain more.

What is a project? Temporary activity (has a defined beginning and an end) Scope (the goal or result of the activity, like a building, like understanding a topic or how to do something, like presenting at a science fair, or like developing an app and getting it on line) Resources (things you need to finish the project, like time, other people, things, or money) Here’s an example? Studying for a test…..Temporary Activity – 7 to 8:30 pm; Scope/Goal - really understanding what you’ll be tested on; Resources - your time, materials (notes, textbook, an internet connection), and maybe a study buddy to call or text. Can you give more examples?

What is project management? Applying skills, tools, and techniques to project activities so that the goal or result can be completed. Can be informal for small projects, but for very large projects, like building the space shuttle or developing software for virtual reality, must follow some formal rules and use standard methods. Can you describe some skills, tools, and techniques you’ve used in doing projects?

How do schools present projects or project management? ? Informal activities using “common sense,” combined with some rules from the teacher Project/problem based learning (PBL), especially in STEM/STEAM or CTE programs Project management classes Are any of you in STEM/STEAM, CTE, or project management classes? Can you give other examples of where you learned project management in school?

Why should students and teachers learn project management ? An important life skill A potential career after high school or college What career fields do you think use project management?

Where can students and teachers find more information on project management? ? The Project Management Institute Educational Foundation (PMIEF) or it’s partner educational or business organizations - www.pmief.org for on-line resources or other info, or email Sylvia Rivera at sylvia.rivera@pmi.org Local chapters of the Project Management Institute (PMI) - https://www.pmi.org/membership/chapters/north-america Local companies that might use project management Educational publishers that produce project management materials Email or call me: Jo Ferguson, jo@csswa.com, 303-423-2072
