Title: Properties of Matter Discuss: What is the difference between physical properties and chemical properties of matter?

Copy and complete the chart using the properties provided for each substance along with additional properties you observe Substance Physical property Chemical property Additional observations

What do all of the physical properties have in common? What do all of the chemical properties have in common? Bonus: what was the reason some cards were pink and some were blue?

Properties of Matter Every pure substance (element or compound) has a specific set of properties. Properties of matter can be either physical or chemical.

Physical Properties Can be observed without changing the substance into another substance Examples: color state of matter density (mass per volume) freezing point (temperature at which a substance freezes) solubility (ability to dissolve) malleability (how easily a metal can be manipulated)

Chemical Properties Describes a substances ability to change into a different substance In other words, the ability or inability of a substance to react with another substance These properties can only be observed when a substance undergoes a chemical change Ex/ sodium has the ability to react with water, gold does not react with water

Homework Complete two four square vocabulary boxes for the terms: 1. Physical property 2. Chemical property
