Mixtures and Pure Substances

Matter is any material that takes up space and has mass.

Where’s the matter?

Matter can be solid, liquid, or gas.

Properties describe the characteristics of matter. Every material has its own set of properties.

Properties Colour Odour Taste Feel Density Boiling Point Melting Point

It exists in three states: solid, liquid, gas. Some properties of water? It is colourless It is tasteless It is odourless It exists in three states: solid, liquid, gas. It has a high specific heat capacity. It freezes at 0 degrees Celsius. It boils at 100 degrees Celsius. ONE SET OF PROPERTIES!

Properties of Chocolate Chip Cookie? What taste? What melting point? What colour? Two sets of properties!

Homogeneous matter is described using one set of properties.

Heterogeneous matter is described using more than one set of properties.
