Phonics 2 ee ar ay ch igh oo ow How do I teach phonics? Alice Atkinson ToD & Phonics Lead

Session Aims To know how to structure a phonics session. To have a range of strategies for teaching phonics. To have a plan for a phonics session for your own setting. To share good practice across settings.

Current Pratice Share with your group: Do you use phonics at the moment? If not, what do you use? How do you structure your lessons? What do you think a good lesson needs to include? How effective do you think your practice is at the moment?

The Fun of Phonics Ugandan phonics scheme designed by Jody Spencer Designed to support and improve the standards of reading and writing in primary education in Uganda, by equipping teachers with new skills and methodology.

Structuring a session Hear, say, do Revision Teach new sound with picture, action and rhyme Reading activities Reading comprehension Writing activities Hear, say, do

Ideas for recap m a s d t i n p g Flashcards Flashcards – change your voice Left or right? Sound table Countdown m a s d t i n p g

Ideas for blending Puppets Use a simple puppet or toy to give children instructions. The instructions should be given by saying the sounds in the word e.g. Pupil can you stand u-p or Pupil can you j-u-m-p Find things that start with…./I spy… Match the picture Read a caption Yes/No questions Real or made up words?

Ideas for segmenting Where is the sound? Hold up a sound Allocate a sound that pupils have learnt to a row or group. Say a word. If the pupils are in the row/group with the starting sound for the word, they must put their hand up or hold up their sound written on their slate. Where is the sound? Say a word, eg. Bat. Ask pupils where in the word one of the sounds come eg. Where is the ‘a’ sound: beginning, middle or end? Missing sound Draw a picture and write all but one of the sounds next to it, eg. _og next to a dog. Children to work out what the missing sound is. Segmenting frame Write a caption Remember and write a sentence

Structuring a session Hear, say, do Revision Flashcards Teach new sound with picture, action and rhyme ee – Three monkeys in a tree Reading activities Real or made up? (green, queen, teef, sabteen, bleed, meep) True/false – A bee has seventeen teeth Reading comprehension “I can see three green trees,” said Sam How many trees can Sam see? Writing activities Draw and caption – I can see sixteen trees Right or wrong spelling? Seen (sin, seen, sen, see) Hear, say, do

Ideas for teaching different graphemes Grouping graphemes that have the same sound. Best guess. Identifying different graphemes. Yesterday’s great race was bravely won by Dave the Snail.

Plan a session Where are your children at? What are their strengths and weaknesses How can you find out? What activities could you use? Share ideas. What could you do differently?
