Aim: How can we describe the location of any place on Earth? Do Now: Describe the location of points A and B: 4 3 2 A 1 B 0 1 2 3 4

Grid System of the Earth Latitude and Longitude Used to accurately describe locations on Earth

LATITUDE Describes locations north and south of the Equator Also called PARALLELS The Equator is the principle reference line 0° is the Equator

The Tropics The Tropic of Cancer is 23.5o N latitude The Tropic of Capricorn is 23.5o S latitude

Label your reference table! On page 3 highlight the tropic of cancer and tropic of Capricorn, and the equator On page 4 do the same.

Longitude Describes locations east and west of the Prime Meridian Runs from the North Pole to the South Pole NOT PARALLEL Meets at the poles 0° is the Prime Meridian

Latitude  fatitude – across the ‘waist’ of the globe – or flatitude (it runs flat) Longitude  longitude – the ‘height’ of the globe

Minutes divided into 60 seconds. How do we measure latitude and longitude? Latitude and longitude measured in degrees. Degrees divided into 60 minutes. Minutes divided into 60 seconds.

45oN, 0o x

Regents Questions How are latitude and longitude lines drawn on a globe of Earth? Latitude lines are parallel and longitude lines meet at the poles. Latitude lines are parallel and longitude lines meet at the equator Longitude lines are parallel and latitude lines meet at the poles. Longitude lines are parallel and latitude lines meet at the equator.

An airplane takes off from a location at 17oN latitude and flies to a new location 55o due north of its starting point. What latitude has the airplane reached? 28oN 38oN 55oN 72oN

Which reference line passes through both the geographic North Pole and the geographic South Pole? 0o latitude 0o longitude Tropic of Cancer (23.5oS) Tropic of Capricorn (23.5oN)

Reference Table Project On your reference table turn to the two maps of NYS. Notice how the lines of latitude and longitude are marked. With a ruler extend the lines of latitude and longitude across NYS.
