Research Techniques CH. 12

Research Techniques Research is easier & faster because of the electronic age we live in (technology) Traditional research methods (library books, magazines, newspapers, & encyclopedias) Electronic literacies (words chosen to search for information on the internet & how relevant is it?) Be skeptical/use caution when evaluating/using online sources: consider 80% commercial sites, focus on governmental & educational sources, use documents with authors (credibility) Avoid Plagiarism

Using & Citing Sources CH. 13

Why do we use sources? Provide useful background information Answer a question To provide evidence to support a claim Raise interesting questions

Using sources Summarizing (information presented much shorter than original) Paraphrasing (not trying to imitate the original- setting out to reorganize in a refreshed and original way) Quoting (exactly what the source says using quotation marks appropriately) Avoid Plagiarism
