Minutes - Monday 09/19/2005 September 2005 Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.15-05-0478-00-0000 September 2005 Minutes - Monday 09/19/2005 Chair discussed Agenda and The charter process and scope: 05-0496-01-wng0 The 802.15 WG rules apply, but WNG may decide to have addition WNG-specific rules. Ian Gifford asked: does it eliminate interest groups? Answer: no, it simplifies the process. Added topics in: Reliability Body area network Mobile nomadic mesh network. Location based is NOT raging. Ian Gifford then presented: -05-0548-00-wng0 Ian also proposed Liaisons to other standard organizations. Michael D. McInnis asked for Management of the network and Ad hoc from PAN to WAN to PAN. Chair: It is also OK to present a usage case (market requirement). Arthur W. Astrin, Ph.D. Arthur W. Astrin, Ph.D.

Minutes Wednesday 09/21/2005 September 2005 Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.15-05-0478-00-0000 September 2005 Minutes Wednesday 09/21/2005 Chair, Eric Schylander opened the meeting at 8 AM, document 0496r3 the Agenda for IEEE 802.15 WPAN Meeting was presented. He reviewed Monday's WNG meeting and added some ideas to the issues list, after people approached him at the conclusion of Monday's meeting: NFC, Multi-Packet/Contention Free MAC/PHY. 8:10am Bob Heile began his presentation.. The WNG is the incubator for spawning new ideas and should be open to all new ideas. However, we need to have a set of filters, or a methodology for reviewing and processing the ideas. He requested a chairs guideline. We are not a LAN or a WAN. In 802 there are three WG related to WAN, one to WLAN, and one to WPAN. On one level we need to have a concept as to whether an area fits into 802.15. We file two documents: the PAR and the 5 Criteria (an 802 document). The 5 Criteria relate very well to what this group is doing. A distinct identity. We need to work on things where there is a unique problem that has not been addressed within other standards bodies. For instance, taking on a "Hyperlan" type standard while we have an 802.11 standard is the wrong approach. Broad market potential (If you can do this, is there a big market out there?). Technical feasibility is an important criteria Economic feasibility is important. It is really important to establish a set of guidelines, Bob asked Eric to have something for the next meeting in Vancouver in November. Straw poll, is there enough interest to work on a guideline document those that raised there hands were, Irwin Noble, Rick Roberts, Klas Meyer, Vern Arthur W. Astrin, Ph.D. Arthur W. Astrin, Ph.D.

Minutes Wednesday 09/21/2005 (cont’d) Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.15-05-0478-00-0000 September 2005 Minutes Wednesday 09/21/2005 (cont’d) Presentation by Rick Roberts -05-0511-01-wgn0 at 8:41 AM: Security at Phy layer – location Rick "wants to reduce the RF signature. Wants to hide the ranging information, it is desirable to hide using physical layer properties. Most attacks to security are middle man attacks, have you thought about this? Rick thinks that man in the middle attacks cannot occur with a hidden physical layer. Chan, is a strong believer in physical security. encryption is protection from gaining value in the communications, must know identity of device. Lots of people are making money off the weaknesses of 802, there is quite a constituency in keeping 802 security weak. There is security as well in redundancy and in using the redundancy effectively. Rob Poor commented that localization is a big market, hiding the PHY layer makes detection of the radio transmitter hard and inconvenient but not impossible. Rick is looking for comments Presentation by Rene Struik -05-0561-00-wng0 at 8:55 AM: Configuration-and-Trust-Management-discussion This presentation discusses configuration and trust management issues related to the secure operations of ad-hoc networks. Each device may choose its own set of favorite configuration managers. This configuration manager list should be adaptable by a device with the proper credentials. Trust guarantee options, evidence that info indeed originates from purported configuration device. Inspection of conformance of configuration afterwards. An assisted configuration relies on an external configuration device with, usually , a far more powerful user interface. Unsecured configuration, secured configuration (public-key based technique), secure configuration (symmetric key technique). Presentation by Robert Poor -05-0559-00-wng0 at 9:26 AM: study-group-proposal-active-rfid Rob went over five Criteria: Broad market potential, Compatibility, Distinct Identity, Technical Feasibility, Economic Feasibility Rob is advocating the formation of a study group around using 802.15 WPAN technology for active RFID tags. Rob will continue with this topic during the November meeting with the goal of possibly forming a study group. Tentative Next Steps: Prepare formation of Study Group, perhaps under the Low Rate PAN umbrella. Solicit input to define PAR and 5C. Rob asked how many would be interested: 13 people raised their hand 9:50am motion to adjourn, Rob Poor seconded, meeting adjourned. Arthur W. Astrin, Ph.D. Arthur W. Astrin, Ph.D.
