What is a PowerPoint presentation? A collection of slides used to enhance an informative speech

don’t What to Consider… Know your audience - don’t present information that the audience already knows Use Restraint- overuse colors or decorations don’t

What to Condsider… Be accurate and ethical - double check your information, figures and sources Choose appropriate graphics and styles – use appropriate accents to your presentation

What to Consider… Use outline Formats – They are easier to follow, don’t write paragraphs Use bullets - Bullets imply no significant order Use numbers - To show rank or sequence Use Restraint - No more than one topic per slide

6 lines of text per slide 6 words per line Use the 6 x 6 rule: 6 lines of text per slide 6 words per line Allow plenty of room around borders and illustrations

Select Readable Type Size *This is 40 Point* Minimum 36 point for titles 24 for body text 12 Point Font is Too Small for a presentation

Use Readable Typeface and Font Use Sans serif (no curly feet) such as Arial or body text Serif text is difficult to read in a presentation Use serif such as Roman for titles only

Adjust Lettering to Discriminate or Emphasize Make Titles larger type size than body elements Emphasize important statements or words with bold, italic, larger size or different font.

Choose Color Carefully Use the same color consistently throughout the presentation Use light letters on dark backgrounds

Use Solid Colors instead of Fill Patterns on Charts Patterns on bars or pie slices cause confusion Solid colors convey a clear bold message

Changing the Background Darker vs. lighter? Home tab Layout Look at the options

Changing Color Schemes It’s Easy! Click the design tab Colors Change the color scheme of your slides

Changing the Design Template Click the design tab Change your theme Colors Fonts

Your Slides are Not your Presentation Do not read your slides to the audience Do not overuse PowerPoint Too many slides become pointless!
