What was ancient Greece and what did it contribute to the world What was ancient Greece and what did it contribute to the world? Notes #18

Ancient Greece was a civilization that existed in Southeastern Europe, from 1750 B.C. to 133 B.C.  Zeus; King of Greek Gods; God of Sky and Thunder  Athena; Greek God of War and Wisdom

Greece was located next to the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, which provided Greece a link to the rest of the world. Poseidon; Greek God of Seas

Greece had many excellent harbors to encourage seafaring trade, which helped Greece grow.

The geography of Greece was mountainous, causing Greece to develop into a collection of separate, independent city-states.

Greek city-states, such as Athens and Sparta, never united to form a single nation due to Greece’s mountainous geography. Ancient Athens Ancient Sparta

Greece has had many contributions to modern Western civilization, including:

1. Establishing the basis for Western democracy and mass education.

2. Developing art, literature, and philosophy that was admired and copied by the West. Homer  Author of The Odyssey  Socrates and Plato

3. Setting standards in math, medicine, and science that are still used today. Pythagoras and the Pythagorean theorem Eratosthenes Aristarchus Hippocrates and the Hippocratic Oath
