Team Project Review the background information and project teams on our course site Work with the engineers (4-5) and your PM team member(s) You have to assemble and manage a project plan Your deliverable : project plan binder (due last day of class) Reach out to your team members by Monday (Sept 10) Establish your meeting/communication cadence as soon as possible You will report on your progress on a weekly basis starting week ending Sept 23 (end of week 4) During studio days, you will be working/presenting your documents GO!

Identifying the Work to Be Done Chapter 6

What exactly are you going to do? Requirements? Deliverables? Success Criteria? What exactly are you going to do? Planning Phase Risks? Who does what and How long will it take? How much $$$?

What are project “requirements”? The project goal, objectives and solution identify what you're trying to achieve, and the general approach for getting there Requirements provide the details of the outcome Getting requirements right is vital !

Relative Cost to Correct a Software Requirement Defect

Web research What is a “deliverable”? How do they relate to “objectives” and how do they relate to measuring the success of the project? Product produced as part of a project, such as hardware or software, planning documents, or meeting minutes Project deliverables are the results that the project delivers against the objectives established. They help you measure progress & success (success criteria)

What is “project scope” and “scope statement” ? Web research What is “project scope” and “scope statement” ? Project Scope : part of project planning that involves determining and documenting a list of specific project goals, deliverables, tasks, costs and deadlines : what are we going to do? Scope statement : document what is and isn't included in the project scope

What is “scope creep” and “project scope management”? Web research What is “scope creep” and “project scope management”? Scope creep : uncontrolled changes or continuous growth in a project's scope. This can occur when the scope of a project is not properly defined, documented, or controlled. Project Scope Management : set of processes that ensure a project's scope is defined and mapped accurately. Scope Management techniques allow project managers and supervisors to allocate just the right amount of work necessary to complete a project successfully.

Question What do you say when the CEO tells you that they would like you to add a new feature to the system you have been developing for him? What do you say when an accounts payable clerk tells you the exact same thing?

What is “change control”? Web research What is “change control”? A systematic approach to managing all changes made to a product or system. The purpose is to ensure that no unnecessary changes are made, that all changes are documented, that services are not unnecessarily disrupted and that resources are used efficiently.

What is “scope verification” and why do we do it? Web research What is “scope verification” and why do we do it? Formal acceptance of the completed project scope by the stakeholders

What is the “work breakdown structure (WBS)”” Remember? What is the “work breakdown structure (WBS)”” WBS : deliverable-oriented decomposition of a project into smaller components. A WBS contains two kinds of tasks. Summary tasks, and work packages.

What are “summary tasks”? Grouping of related tasks (work packages) that together, complete a higher level task Summarize project work Example from studio day on Wednesday? “Research entry Requirements”

What do we mean when we say the WBS allows us to: Improve estimates Keep the team focused Assign work to resources Keep the project on track

What problems do you encounter if work packages are too large What problems do you encounter if work packages are too large? What problems do you encounter if work packages are too small?

Is it a good idea to “borrow a WBS”?

What do we mean when we say we’re going to build the WBS from the top-down? Start with the scope document. Decompose (that is, break down) the project by: The deliverables you need to produce The milestones you need to accomplish

Class exercise Practice creating a WBS (org chart type like in the video/previous page) for : Building a patio and installing a hot tub Make sure that you have at least 3 Summary Tasks under the top level of your chart (Project Name) and 3 levels - see example from previous page

Change Leadership day - Monday Change Leadership day - Monday! - After reading the introduction chapter, The Heart of Change, come to class prepared to : 1) compare and contrast the difference in the techniques and the relative strengths/weaknesses of See-Feel-Change vs. Analysis-Think-Change. 2) discuss at a very high level the eight steps of successful large-scale change. - On all future leadership day : prepare a brief PowerPoint presentation (2-5 slides) for your 3 favorite short stories. The first slide will “tell the story”. The following slide(s) will include key lessons learned the reader should take away from the case. Students will be selected at random to lead the class discussion on one of these short stories and will use this slide deck to add structure to their discussion.
