The story behind the Genocide Rwanda The story behind the Genocide

Some Background Information Great Lakes Region Colonized by Germans, then Belgians (1919) who sought gold.  Most Rwandans are Christians, rising Muslim population.  1 in 5 children die before 5th birthday 2 Doctors per 100,000 people Life Expectancy in the 63 for men and women.

Population is 11 million (2013) Economic Output is equal to Haiti  Capital is Kigali  Most people are farmers Coffee and Tea are main exports Africa's most densely populated country; size of Maryland. Belgians were very active, maintaining schools, hospitals, infrastructure.  

The Hutu Majority Tribe in Rwanda They lead an attack on the Tutsi population "Paul Rusesabagina", the main character in H.R. is a HUTU.

General Bizamungu - Leader of Rwandan HUTU Army - Often takes bribes   - Leader of Rwandan HUTU Army - Often takes bribes - Charged with War Crimes after the conflict for not stopping the genocide - May have supported militias that were committing genocide. 

The Interhamwe -Translation: "Those who stand together." -Rebels in Rwanda that committed the majority of the genocide against the Tutsi. -They answer to no one. -They are HUTU extremists -'The Crazy People'       

Col. Oliver and the U.N. -Leader of U.N. Peacekeeping Force in Rwanda. -UN deployed in Rwanda to aid victims of genocide and negotiate peace.  -"Not allowed to shoot" -"What is the difference between a peace keeper and a peace maker?" -Col Oliver is actually Romeo Dallaire in reality. Dallaire is now a Senator in Canada.  -Lead UN role in protecting foreign nationals and stopping the war.   

The Rwandan Patriotic Front -The "RPF Rebels" -Tutsi force that is fighting the Interhamwe and the corrupt Rwandan Army.  -Eventually push the Hutu killers over the border into the Congo. -Establish a new government and restore order. -Currently in control of the country.  

Rwanda Today Paul Kagame: Tutsi President Oppressing the Hutu? Not a fan of Paul Rusesabagina  Dispute over "Hotel Rwanda"  Paul R. says "New Genocide Looming" and he blames Kagame. Tourism / Political Instability / L.E. is 50 Yet, still voted one of the best places in Africa to invest.
