ClinicalTrials.gov clinicaltrials.gov ClinicalTrials.gov is a Web-based resource that provides patients, their family members, and health care professionals, with easy access to information on clinical studies on a wide range of diseases and conditions. clinicaltrials.gov

Homepage The homepage features the study search options and search help resources in one convenient location, the "Search for Studies" area.

Navigating the Site From any page on the site the menu bar provides direct access to five areas of content. Each of which includes multiple pages of information.

Understanding Clinical Studies Highlighted here is the content you will find in the “About Clinical Studies” area

Search Options and Help From the “Search for Studies" area you can: Begin a Basic search Go to the Advanced search form, Begin browsing for studies by topic or On a world map. We will review each of these search options. Additionally, from this area you can get help with searching, finding studies, and reading study records.

Content for User Groups Patients and families, researchers, and study record managers are three groups that frequent ClinicalTrials.gov. Therefore customized content views have been developed for each of these groups.

Basic Search To conduct a basic search type a keyword or phrase in the “Search for Studies” search box.

Basic Search Additionally, a “Basic Search” can be conducted from any page by using the “Find Studies” dropdown menu.

Basic Search The Basic Search page contains Search Tips and Practice Searches

Search Scenario Are there any clinical trials using thalidomide to treat HIV related Illnesses? Let’s try a “Basic Search” for studies using the drug Thalidomide (tha li’ doe mide) to treat HIV.

Keyword Search Thalidomide HIV In the search box, type the keywords (CLICK) Thalidomide (tha li’ doe mide) HIV and then click the search button.

Thalidomide Studies Displayed are study records that include the search terms.

Study Record Using the Drug Thalidomide to Stimulate T Cells in HIV-Infected People Let’s review the first result. Click on the title to display the record.

Study Record Notice that the Study sponsor and collaborator information and dates regarding the history of the study are located at the top of the page.

Purpose Likewise, the Purpose section explains what the researchers will do during the clinical trial and why they are conducting the study, this includes the Condition and Drug being investigated.

Additional Resources The record may contain links to other NLM resources that contain information related to the condition or drug.

Eligibility Criteria The “Eligibility” section explains who is allowed to participate in the study.

Advanced Searching Now, ….If you need a more structured and targeted search use the Advanced Search link in the Search for Studies box.

Advanced Searching The Advanced Search form can also be accessed from the “Find Studies” dropdown menu

Advanced Searching The “Advanced Search” form allows numerous options to focus your search, giving you more control over the results.

Advanced Search Fields For example, you can narrow your search by entering or selecting search terms in multiple fields such as recruitment status and location

Search Scenario Are there studies using Zofran (Ondansetron) to reduce alcohol dependence? Let’s try an Advanced Search for studies using Zofran to reduce alcohol dependence.

Advanced Searching Beginning at the Advanced Search Form In the “Conditions” search box, Type “Alcohol dependence” ( Click) (Click)

Zofran Studies The search results page displays a list of studies that contain the search terms.

Modify Search You can make changes to your search by clicking “Modify this search, ” which returns you to the Advanced Search form.

Refine Search The search can now be refined or modified by adding or deleting selections or terms to get fewer or more results.

Notice that the original terms are retained in the Conditions and Interventions Fields.

Modify Recruitment Status Also, notice that The “Recruitment Status” for the search can be changed

Lets change the Recruitment status to “Open Studies”

Open Studies Changing the recruitment field reduced the studies from 12 to 5. Now, the list contains only studies that are recruiting or about to start recruiting.

Studies by Topic An additional way to locate clinical trials, is to search by topic

Studies by Topic Select the “Studies by Topic” feature from the “Find Studies” dropdown menu to search by categories such as Conditions Drugs Interventions Sponsors or Locations

Studies by Topic Users can Browse for studies using any of the following six main categories: • Conditions • Rare diseases • Drug interventions • Dietary supplements • Sponsor/Collaborators (for example, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases • and Locations

Conditions by Category By default on the “Studies by Topic” page the conditions are listed alphabetically

Conditions by Category As and example…to see a list of immune system diseases , click Immune System Diseases

Immune System Disease Studies The search results page includes an alphabetical list of all studies involving immune system diseases, including AIDS related diseases.

Studies on a Map The final Search Option is “Studies on a Map”

Studies on a Map Choose See Studies on a Map to browse for studies conducted in a particular region, country, or state.

Locations of Studies Displayed is a global map with the total number of studies located in each region. Click on the region to see a more detailed map. Let’s view the map of the United States.

Studies in the US Click on any State on the map to see a list of all the studies conducted in that State. Let’s see which states has the fewest studies

Studies Conducted in Wyoming Here is a list of all the studies conducted in Wyoming. Remember these studies are not limited to HIV, but include studies for a broad range of conditions and diseases.

About Clinical Studies Before leaving ClincialTrials.gov, notice the “About Clinical Studies” section. This section provides a brief overview of clinical research and information for potential clinical study participants.

Learn More About Clinical Studies The “Learn more about Clinical Studies” section provides: A brief introduction to clinical research, including types of studies and what happens during a study. Information on eligibility to participate in a study, Risks and benefits of study participation, The informed consent process, and most importantly Questions to ask when considering whether to participate in a study.
