Activator November 21, 2014 1) Copy down tonight’s homework. 2) Take out notebook and packet. 3) In your notebook, write your thoughts to the following questions: Can you describe circumstances (times) when it would be easier to add and subtract mixed numbers by converting them to decimals first? How can estimation be used to help solve addition and subtraction problems with rational numbers? When fractions have large denominators, it would be difficult to find common denominators to add or subtract. When a problem is solved by regrouping, it may be easier to borrow from decimals than fractions. Using estimation can help predict reasonable answers. It is a way to check to see if an answer is reasonable or not.

Objective: SWBAT use their knowledge of adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers to find the sums and differences of decimals and understand the importance of place value to solve problems in real-world context to complete exercises 1-5. Students will demonstrate their understanding when they successfully complete their ticket-to-go. 6.NS.B.3

Vocabulary Addend The number being added ex. 2+6=8 (2 and 6 are the addends) Sum The result of an addition problem ex. 2+6=8 (8 is the sum) Minuend A number from which another number is to be subtracted ex. 29 – 5=24 Subtrahend A number that is to be subtracted from another number. Ex. 29 – 5 =24 Difference The result of a subtraction problem ex. 29-5=24, 24 if the difference

Example 1 (pg. 37) Step 1: Convert the mixed numbers into decimals. 25.3 + 376.77 Step 2: round the addends to the nearest whole number. Then, find the estimated sum. 25 + 377 = 402 Step 3: line up the addends appropriately using place value, and add.

November 21, 2014 Day C topic. How do you feel?

Example 2: (pg. S.37)   The left side of the class will solve this using fractions, the right side of the class will solve this using decimals.

topic. How do you feel?

Students may work with your partner or individually to complete exercises 1-5 on pages 37-38 (14 minutes)
