Strategic Planning of the IOF FootO calendar 2018-2025 Maria Krafft Helgesson & Aron Less IOF Foot Orienteering Commission

Why do we need this? IOF ExGA 2015 & GA 2016: Competition Review Project WOC split from 2019: „Sprint WOC” (even years) & „WOC” (odd years) Annual EOC, also split from 2020 (opposite cycles from WOC) New World Cup concept from 2020 showing potential applicants what we expect from them demand from Federations to plan their national calendars

What is new in this system? Sprint and forest years like (Northern hemisphere) school years EOC moves to autumn to start the sporting year World Cup in June as a dress rehearsal for the respective WOC WOC is the end of the sprint / forest sporting year Bonus: O-Ringen – World Cup all 5 days Designated international & national periods in the IOF calendar

International periods Month Week Global TV-events IOF elite events Intl O-events Other major intl FootO National Apr 14   15 16 17 Tiomila May 18 19 National period 20 21 Intl period 1 World Cup May/Jun 22 CISM Jun 23 24 FIFA/UEFA Jukola 25 Jun/Jul 26 FIFA/UEFA/TdF JWOC WMOC Jul 27 Intl period 2 WOC Other multi-day 28 TdF/World Games 29 World Games 30 Olympics/World Games Intl period 3 World Cup O-Ringen Aug 31 Olympics WUOC 32 WUOC / WMOC 33 34 Intl period 4 World Cup / EOC Aug/Sep 35 Sep 36 37 38 39 Intl period 5 World Cup / EOC Oct 40 41 42 43 International periods

WOC in the future WOC relatively early in the summer – otherwise athletes just skip earlier events (e.g. O-Ringen) WOC preferably in weeks 27 or 28 (might not be possible in Southern hemisphere – WOC Brazil was proposed for October) WOC is now 5 days only – easier and cheaper to organise! Everyone should be able to run all competitions! (Forest) WOC with fixed programme: D1: MQ; D2: Long; D3: rest day; D4: MF; D5: Relay. Preferably only 2 arenas! Sprint WOC: no fixed programme. Rest day after each competition day recommended. One possibility: D1: SQ & SF; D2: rest day; D3: SR; D4: rest day; D5: #3rdsprint

EOC in the future Opposite cycles to WOC. If WOC has sprint formats, EOC has forest formats. WOC 2021 is forest, EOC 2021 is sprint. Date for EOC is either end of August (week 34-35) or late September – early October (week 39-40-41) EOC programme is the same as WOC, but no fixed order of competitions. Long qualification system already tested in 2018. EOC organisers are hard to find, so IOF is investigating ways of how to make EOC more attractive to organise For example risk of TV-income will be with the IOF in the new model, so the organiser only has the fixed Sanction fee (21T EUR)

World Cup 2020 and onwards From 2020 onwards 3 fixed rounds One round is O-Ringen – always week 30 (WOC cannot be 1-4 weeks after O-Ringen): all 5 competitions count One round is ”Swiss Cup” round – 3-4 competitions in Switzerland or in neighbouring countries One round is the IOF round. Ideally this is EOC, but not necessarily. This round may be staged outside of Europe (e.g. pre-WOC). It may also be a round in Europe but not EOC.

Other international events JWOC: ideally moves to mid-July (after WOC), but not fixed (can also be before WOC – see 2020) WMOC: ideally just before WOC or just after WOC, but August is also possible (date clash must be avoided with O-Ringen, Scottish 6 Days, Swiss O Week) (World University Orienteering Championships – even years) (CISM: needs coordination with other events, when in Europe) Regional championships outside of Europe: this is up to the regions to decide – no preferences from IOF EYOC: not mentioned in this system

International periods Month Week Global TV-events IOF elite events Intl O-events Other major intl FootO National Apr 14   15 16 17 Tiomila May 18 19 National period 20 21 Intl period 1 World Cup May/Jun 22 CISM Jun 23 24 FIFA/UEFA Jukola 25 Jun/Jul 26 FIFA/UEFA/TdF JWOC WMOC Jul 27 Intl period 2 WOC Other multi-day 28 TdF/World Games 29 World Games 30 Olympics/World Games Intl period 3 World Cup O-Ringen Aug 31 Olympics WUOC 32 WUOC / WMOC 33 34 Intl period 4 World Cup / EOC Aug/Sep 35 Sep 36 37 38 39 Intl period 5 World Cup / EOC Oct 40 41 42 43 International periods

Any questions? Please note that one of the groupwork sessions will also focus on the Strategic Calendar Planning…
