III. The Holy Spirit in the New Testament Post-Conversion Work of the Holy Spirit III. The Holy Spirit in the New Testament I. He is the Spirit of: Truth (Jn. 14:17) Holiness (Rom. 1:4) Life (Rom. 8:2) Promise (Eph. 1:13) Grace (Heb. 10:29) Glory (1 Pet. 4:14)

III. The Holy Spirit in the New Testament Post-Conversion Work of the Holy Spirit III. The Holy Spirit in the New Testament J. Special benefits and functions He convicts us of sin (John 16:8). He seals us (Eph. 1:13). He teaches us (John 14:26). He guides us into all truth (John 16:13). He reminds us (John 14:26). He comforts us (John 16:7). He equips us with spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12:4-7). He fills indwells) us (Eph. 5:18). He empowers us (Acts 1:8). He guarantees our inheritance in Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:16-17). He bears fruit through us (Gal. 5:22-23).

Can the Holy Spirit leave us? Post-Conversion Work of the Holy Spirit Can the Holy Spirit leave us? 1. Salvation places us in a familial relationship. We are adopted by God. We receive God’s Holy Spirit. “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” (1 Cor. 3:16) “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.” (Rom. 8: 15)

Can the Holy Spirit leave us? Post-Conversion Work of the Holy Spirit Can the Holy Spirit leave us? 2. As God’s children, we receive His Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38) a. Christians are partakers of the divine nature. (1 Pet. 1:4) b. The Holy Spirit dwells in sinners. “All have sinned.” (Rom. 3:23; 1 Jn. 1:8) “The Spirit helps us in our weakness.” (Rom. 8:26) BUT c. The Holy Spirit is restricted by individual faith and action. “…Be filled with the Spirit.” (Eph. 5:18) “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” (Col. 3:16)

Can the Holy Spirit leave us? Post-Conversion Work of the Holy Spirit Can the Holy Spirit leave us? 3. As family members, we can offend God (and the Holy Spirit). We can quench the Spirit. (1 Thess. 5:19) We can grieve the Spirit. (Eph. 4:30) We can insult the Spirit. (Heb. 10:29) Compare: Bad neighbor and bad child Battery and radio station

Can the Holy Spirit leave us? Post-Conversion Work of the Holy Spirit Can the Holy Spirit leave us? 4. The consequences of neglecting/offending the Spirit within us: “…but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.” (Mark 3:29) “ It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance.” (Heb. 6:4-6) “If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left…” (Hebrews 10: 26) -- Spiritual blindness -- Strong delusion -- Seared conscience -- Slave of sin

Next Week: The Fruit of the Spirit Some questions to ponder: What is the difference between the soul of man and spirit of man? How is the spirit of man related to the Holy Spirit? (Rom. 8:16) How is having a spirit different from being a spirit? What causes some people to engage in the works of the flesh while others cultivate the fruit of the Spirit?
