Generation to Generation

Our attitudes are affected by the social influences of the time Generational groups come from a shared historical perspective Generational grouping is one way of understanding peoples’ values, issues & motivations

Matures 1909 - 1945

Matures Born between 1909 – 1945, 60+ years old Strongly value loyalty High ethical & moral standards Great faith in institutions & organizations Willingly follow rules – believe rules have a purpose Look for recognition & appreciation

Baby Boomers 1946 - 1965

Baby Boomers Born 1946 – 1965, 42 – 60 years old 76 million Process oriented & methodical, don’t tend to shoot from the hip Very loyal & optimistic Prefer formality Strong work ethic, “workaholic” coined to describe this generation

Baby Boomers – cont. Believe in “paying ones dues” “Live the job”, get more involved in the soul of the business & take work home Staying in the workforce longer Redefining retirement – working retirement Flexible or semi-retirement schedules

Gen X 1965 - 1980

Gen X 1965 - 1980

Generation X Born 1965 - 1976, 28 – 42 years old Comfortable with change Task oriented & attuned with technology Prefer informality Survival oriented Loyal to a person rather than organization Motivated by opportunities to grow, learn Skeptical of “ladders” & may challenge rules

Generation X – cont. Do not like to be micromanaged Work hard but leave job there Want balance between work and life “Carpe Diem” feel to attitude – can’t count on the future so make each day count Take responsibility for their day to day well being Into self development, analyzing issues

Millennials 1980 - 1988

Generation Y - Millennials Born 1977 -1988, 19 – 30 years old Technically savvy - grown up with email, instant messaging, cell phones “the Tethered Generation” perpetually connected to parents, family, friends Multi-tasking is natural mode of operation Enormous consumers of information

Generation Y / Millennials - cont. Adept at global & diversity issues due to on-line networking Team oriented Very social & civically minded Searching for personal fulfillment Motivated by opportunities to learn new skills

Facts & Thoughts 7-8 year overlap between each generation Individuals on the cusp may identify with both generations 13% of population is 65 & older By 2030, 20% of Americans will be over 65 (app. 70 million) Currently 85 & older is the fastest growing segment

PEO is a mix of all these generations Each brings unique qualities & strengths The interplay of these generations may challenge & stretch the goals & growth of PEO as we learn to work together with individuals who many times come from very different generational experiences, needs & desires.
