Moving to the City

Up and Out Urban areas began to spread outward But building began to grow up, skyscrapers

Draw to the City Industrial jobs Urban lifestyle- no more early morning farm chores, late night city life was a major draw Electricity, indoor plumbing, and telephones Major shopping departments

Downfalls of the City Crime ran rampant Early cities were stark contradictions Stately banks, sooty factories Green-grassed suburbs, treeless ghettos City slums, or tenements were the worst parts of town Extremely crowded, rat infested 7 to 8 stories high, shallow, sunless and ill-smelling air shafts led to minimal ventilation Several families were cramed onto one floor of the tenements

Growth of Immigration People from all over the world moved from their country to gain a new and improved life in democratic America Many who came were illiterate and poor, forced to live in the ever crowded slums
