Warm-Up: Tuesday, October 28 PAGE 231 Objective: To summarize visual and written sources. Question: How do you identify the most important elements of a source? How do you put those sources into your own words?

Multiple Media: Five Step Process Instructions: The following activity will be based upon two sources, the Cosmos episode “Sisters of the Sun” and excerpts from the article “The Women of American Astronomy,” from the journal American Scientist. Students will chunk the reading or the video into five different pieces and give them a title Students will then write a short one to two sentence summary of what each chunk says Stop after doing columns one and two; column three is for after the next activity After doing the Character Portrait, we will write the summary from the perspective of Annie Jump Cannon

Cosmos “Sisters of the Sun” This ten minute clip is about both Annie Jump Cannon and her colleague Cecilia Payne. We will be chunking the film clip about both of them.

Cosmos “Sisters of the Sun”

Cosmos “Sisters of the Sun” Mr. Zhao will do the first chunk for you We will do the second chunk together You will then have time in class to do the rest of the chunks on your own

Cosmos “Sisters of the Sun” Talk with your group members for five minutes and come to a consensus on what the second chunk of the video should be. Write down the title and summary in columns one and two.

Hands Up-Pair Up Raise your hands and meet up with someone who is from a different group Share your chunks and compare and contrast the differences Regroup!

Three Women of American Astronomy Take ten minutes to read through the article and highlight the important events, names, dates, and places, just like we did with yesterday’s sources.

Three Women of American Astronomy Mr. Zhao will do the first chunk of the text for all of you then we will do the next one together. You will then have time in class to work on and finish the last three chunks.

Three Women of American Astronomy Now that Mr. Zhao has done the first chunk, do the following in your groups: Quickly read through the article. Chunk the next part of the article on your own Now talk with your group members and come to a consensus on where the second chunk ends

Exit Slip On a separate piece of paper, write down chunk two in two columns, combine elements from each group member’s summary: Chunk Title: Summary:

Character Portrait-Annie Jump Cannon Before getting to the the third column of the previous activity, you will have to have a better grasp of Annie Jump Cannon’s personality.

Character Portrait-Annie Jump Cannon HOMEWORK: Fill out the character portrait, or the stick figure, for Annie Jump Cannon. Base your details off of the articles from yesterday and today and the video clip from Cosmos.

Due Tomorrow Cornell Notes: Starting Research Three Sources-Annotated Bibliography Homework: Independent Research

Tomorrow: Bring an electronic device with you tomorrow. If you want to, you may use your phone in class for the activity.
