Progress Where am I now? A resource designed to help learners consider their long term goals and aspirations. A short PowerPoint presentation for staff to use directly with learners.

How to use this resource Rationale/Outline Ofsted inspections have repeatedly found that provision of study programmes are a concern highlighting: - A lack of rigour in the targets set to improve learner progress. To support learners with effective target setting we need to develop these skills to ensure that they see the study programme as a whole and link to their long term goals and aspiration. Suggestions on how to use this resource Staff can use the notes and questions under the power point slides with learners to prompt discussion in groups or individual tutorials. Use the card sort activity to help learners consider their own priorities. Print out the template slides and encourage learners to make notes. Impact Personalised learner targets which are mapped to career goals to maximise learner progress. An improvement in target setting will support learners in setting their own high aspirations to accelerate progress to achieve their chosen career route and employment destination. Staff can use with learners as above or learners can access individually. It can be used in tutorials or as a group activity to encourage learners to see the study programme as a whole programme (joined up) and for learners to link the study programme to their ultimate career aspiration (Long term goal) Education and Training Foundation: Progress – my goals and aspirations Find more resources at www.excellencegateway.org.uk

All about me Consider these statements: I enjoy working with people, I like the idea of being part of a team. I’m looking for a steady job with good job security. I want to advance my knowledge and skills. I would like to progress into higher education. I would like to be in a management role. I enjoy taking on responsibility and I’d like to lead a team of people. I want to take responsibility for my own time, choose what I do, how and when. I want to be my own boss and run my own business one day. Group discussion with learner – encourage debate about the benefits and drawbacks of these options. Link to individual career aspirations. Add other options if suggested by learners. Education and Training Foundation: Progress – my goals and aspirations Find more resources at www.excellencegateway.org.uk

Impact on learners “I really enjoy this work. I hated maths at school and thought I was rubbish. Now I can see I need maths in my job, I really enjoy it. I would like to work for a major accident repair company one day. I know that I need to do well on my course to get a job like that.” Alex, Independent Training Provider. Encourage learners to come up with their own quotes. Create a bank of slides that include learner quotes for future groups. My progress – What helps me Card sort activity Consider these answers and select 4 in order of priority. Being treated like an adult. Opportunities to talk through problems or issues. Group work and group activities. Time to reflect. Activity based and practical lessons. Taking responsibility for my own progress. Being given choices. Being listened to. Once placed in order of priority, compare with others and talk in pairs. Make a note of the to four answers and discuss with your tutor at your next tutorial. Print this and cut out cards. Use this activity to help learners recognise different priorities and consider what matters to them as individuals. Study Programme - progress IAG Main Learning Goal Maths English Enrichment Work experience Achievement of learning goal So how will the study programme help me to achieve my goal? The purpose of this image is to help learners to see and understand the study programme as a whole. - A change in mindset and culture to focus on a whole provider approach to setting long term career goals to improve learner progress in the study programme including destination and career routes. - Encourage discussion about different types of career choices in preparation for the next slide. Education and Training Foundation: Progress – my goals and aspirations Find more resources at www.excellencegateway.org.uk

progress Achievement of learning goal Career guidance (IAG) Will help me to choose my main goal and career path. Main Learning Goal Will help me to complete my course and qualifications. Maths Will help me to be more efficient in my job and problem solve. English Will help me to communicate effectively within business/industry. Enrichment Will help me to learn about teamwork and healthy living. Work experience Will help me to prove my skills and practical knowledge. Achievement of learning goal Will enable me to fulfil my potential. An example of a completed chart will aid discussion which can include: All components of the study programme. Goals which are personalised with learners. Education and Training Foundation: Progress – my goals and aspirations Find more resources at www.excellencegateway.org.uk

My career choice Using the chart consider your career….. How will the study programme help me to achieve my career goal? Discussion about different types of career choices will inform learners of options available to them. Learners can then research careers and requirements for their chosen pathway. In preparation for the next slide research can include maths, English, work experience, and skill requirements for their career goal. Education and Training Foundation: Progress – my goals and aspirations Find more resources at www.excellencegateway.org.uk

My progress – my programme IAG Main Learning Goal Maths English Enrichment Work experience Achievement of learning goal A blank chart has been created for learners to identify their individual goals. Print this slide as an individual handout. Ask learners to discuss in groups or pairs and then complete. Encourage ownership of learners’ goals which link to ultimate career - Learners can record these on their ILP.

My progress – my programme What can I focus on to help achieve my career goal? . Print this slide as an individual handout. Encourage learners to identify two areas of the study programme they would like to focus on and in the arrow – why? Use this document in tutorials to individualise target setting mapped to career goals. An example: Animal care programme – work placement Boarding Kennels. Working out individual rations will help me to understand the breeds and demonstrate my knowledge and understanding. Calculating the rations will demonstrate my ability to use maths in the workplace. Working out the order based on needs and current stock will prove my initiative. Presenting my findings to the manager will show I can communicate. Recording in my work placement logbook will help to evidence my progress. Use the maths calculations sheet from college to work out individual rations of dog food based on the height and weight of the dogs currently housed. Using this information, calculate requirements for the next month, check current stock and calculate the order required. Present my calculations and findings to the manager. Record in my work placement log book. An example of the type of target learners could be encouraged to write. (You may also want to link to other ETF resources within the toolkit – personalised targets.) Robust meaningful targets are specific to the individual, measurable, achievable and time bound. Impact on learners “In tutorials we discuss all sorts of topics as a group. Our tutor links our studies at college to business or careers. It makes everything we do at college more interesting and relevant” Thomas, GFE college Encourage learners to come up with their own quotes. Create a bank of slides that include learner quotes for future groups. Education and Training Foundation: Progress – my goals and aspirations Find more resources at www.excellencegateway.org.uk
