Story: The school council Easy read

This story introduces the concept of representing other people This story introduces the concept of representing other people. Read the story with pupils and discuss what skills the characters need to represent their friends’ ideas to the school council. Talk about how MPs are elected to Parliament, to represent the views of people living in their area.

Mena and Joe are members of their school council. This is Mena. This is Joe. Mena and Joe are members of their school council. It is a very important job because they represent the views of their class.

The school council helps to make their school the best it can be. Every week Mena and Joe set up a listening table at playtime. Their friends talk to them about their problems and their ideas to make the school better.

At the next school council meeting Mr At the next school council meeting Mr. Webb told the children they had be given £100 to spend on playtime equipment. As members of the school council you need to find out how your friends would like us to spend the money.

Mena and Joe set to work listening to their friends ideas. A giant climbing frame! New skipping ropes! Extra footballs!

As the week went on, Mena and Joe started to hear some new ideas. A place to talk! A craft area. Shade on hot days. A place to read. Somewhere quiet.

Some people want new skipping ropes and footballs. When the school council next met, Mena and Joe told Mr. Webb about all the ideas their friends had shared with them. Some people want new skipping ropes and footballs. But lots of people want a quiet space. A place to read and do craft activities on hot days.

Don’t worry! You have given me a good idea of what to do. The children were worried. They had represented their friends ideas but they were not all about buying new equipment. Don’t worry! You have given me a good idea of what to do.

Two weeks later, a new quiet space opened in the playground Two weeks later, a new quiet space opened in the playground. There were sun shades and activity boxes. Everyone was excited! Quiet space

Mena and Joe thought the new quiet space was fantastic! I was able to spend the money on the things your friends really wanted because you represented their views so well!

Mena and Joe represented their friends ideas at the school council. Do you have a school council at your school?
