Notebook Entry #2 – Left Side Debating American Ideals & Paragraph Writing Create a spectrum on the left side of notebook. Be sure to leave room for paragraph writing. Add each event on to the spectrum. __________________________________________ Did NOT Did live live up to American up to Ideals American Ideals

Elements of a Paragraph – Paste into Right Side Topic sentence (claim)-introduces the main idea of the paragraph and makes a CLAIM – takes a position that will be proven Evidence - the facts, documents, examples , etc. that thoroughly PROVE the CLAIM in the topic sentence of the paragraph. Analysis-author’s comments pointing out connections, relationships, similarities, differences—extending the evidence to further PROVE the CLAIM in the topic sentence. Closing statement- reminds reader that CLAIM has been proven & pulls paragraph together, & often has a transition to the next topic sentence.
