Why do we need a RSHP resource Why do we need a RSHP resource? Every child and young person has the right to learn about relationships, sexual health and parenthood – this is called RSHP for short.

Why do we need a RSHP resource? Young people identify: Shortfalls in key areas such as the breadth of topics, relevance to the pressures they face in relationships. A sense that RSHP is often not a ‘real’ subject or tagged on, or given low priority. Teachers/educators: Express a lack of confidence or are unsure about what to cover when. They don’t know what resources to use or feel that current material isn’t addressing children and young people’s needs and interests. Identify a lack of narrative or progression on some important areas for learning. Want to see a refreshed focus on relationships and parenthood, alongside sexual health/’sex ed’.

We need a RSHP resource that: Is up-to-date and deals with real issues like social media, consent and pornography. Helps children and young people to learn about their bodies, about sex and about keeping safe. Helps children and young people to learn about their right to be healthy, happy and safe in all their relationships. Support professional judgement and progression in learning. Reflect the values and principles which should underpin teaching and learning of RSHP, taking account of the diversity of learners and making explicit a commitment to the rights of children and young people. Is connected to good professional support and training.
