Organization of Living Things Page in your science notes.
Levels of Organization from smallest to largest
Aim: How do ecologists organize organisms & their environment?
How are living things organized? There are various levels of organization: and get bigger. Let’s start small.
At every level of organization structure is arranged based on function.

The Levels of Organization of Life Mod.A U.1 L.4

Research Project Conduct research and make notes on one organ system in a typical animal or plant. Create a presentation using PowerPoint or similar, to teach the class. Between 10-15 slides.

Must show: Structure - of whole system and component organs. Include cell structure Function – How the organs work together to meet the needs of the organism What happens if the system or an organ in the system is diseased or has a disorder Any other important fact.

Levels of Organization Atom Molecule Organelles Cell Tissue Organ Organ System Organism Population Community Ecosystem Biomes

Basic building block of all matter. Atom Basic building block of all matter.

Group of atoms held together by covalent bonds; has no overall charge. Molecule Group of atoms held together by covalent bonds; has no overall charge.

Organelles -

Basic unit of all organisms; all living things are composed of cells. All cell parts built up from molecules of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, etc Cell

Types of Cells Cells can be specialized -have a certain function Function = job Function is related structure Structure = how parts of the cell are put together Shape Material it’s made from Structure of a brain cell is different from muscle cell – so different functions

Tissue - Groups of cells that work together to perform a specific function.

For example, red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body For example, red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. Their thin, flexible structure helps them squeeze through tiny blood vessels.

Organ Group of tissues organized to perform complex activities within an organism.

Multiple organs that work together to perform a specific life function. Organ System

Anything that possesses all the characteristics of living things. Made up of many organ systems working together. Organism

Population Group of organisms of one species that interbreed and live in the same place at the same time.

Community Collection of several interacting populations that inhabit a common environment.

Ecosystem Interactions among populations in a community (biotic factors) and the community’s physical surroundings (abiotic factors).

Biomes A collection of ecosystems around the world Regions of the world with similar climate (weather, temperature) animals and plants. There are terrestrial biomes (land) and aquatic biomes, both freshwater and marine.
